- This wasn't made for Star Trek fans, that much is certain. Watching ten minutes of this before mercifully shutting it off makes me question whether I have more patience than I thought, or if I'm just incredibly gullible. I desperately waited for it to improve, but it only spiraled downwards. One eccentric character can add depth to a story, but a cast entirely composed of them is simply distracting and overwhelming. Many critics have echoed the sentiment that the show felt like a cheap imitation of other, better spy thrillers, lacking the nuance and philosophical depth that Star Trek is known for. The writing was particularly lambasted, described as "cliched," "predictable," and "insulting to the intelligence of the audience." Section 31 had the potential to be a compelling exploration of the darker side of the Federation, but it ultimately squandered that opportunity with its shallow characters, generic plotlines, and a complete disregard for the core values that have always defined Star Trek.
- I liked this one because of the cast, but I saw much better black-ops stories on Star Trek: Picard and Discovery when they mentioned Section 31, which I loved. The movie should've been introduced with the same quality as other recent Star Trek shows. Out of the new era, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds are top-tier. If you're gonna make movies, please—you already have great references to draw inspiration from! Oh, and please, let's never talk about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
- They tried to make a Suicide Squad type movie where Star Trek meets 5th Element; unfortunately, they failed. I'm not sure why you'd want to make the most serious concept of Starfleet and possibly modern society, Section 31 - a black ops organization within the government that has little to no oversight, as ridiculous as possible. I believe making this into a serious drama showing how Section 31 could exist alongside Starfleet despite opposing ideals could've been beautiful. The good: -They added more background and a little bit more depth to Philippa Georgiou. -Shiny special effects The bad: -Everything else?
- Still better than Star Trek: Nemesis. Going in with low expectations meant this was actually an enjoyable, yet cringey way to waste 95 minutes. The core of the concept is good, the problem is trying to squeeze 10 episodes into 95 minutes doesn’t work. This does however have the feel of the Serenity movie, except with pointy ears instead of brown coats, so we might actually see something come to life from this.
