Als eines Tages der cholerische Firmenchef der Royalton Company vor der Haustür steht und den Rennfahrer mit imposanten Versprechen abwerben möchte, schlägt dieser das Angebot aus – und macht sich somit zum ärgsten Feind von Royalton und dessen skrupellosen Handlangern, die die Rennen für saftige Profite manipulieren. Gemeinsam mit dem undurchsichtigen Ex-Rivalen Racer X versucht die Racer-Familie deshalb, den schmierigen Unternehmern den Garaus zu machen – bei jener Querfeldein-Rallye, die einst Speeds Bruder das Leben kostete.

- Jean Sean3. Februar 2026The Wachowskis' misunderstood masterpiece. This might come out wrong but it's the right amount of cheese and mediocre CGI for this film about a childrens cartoon. Everything felt very intentional and not like someone was half assing their job. I love the story, the wacky pacing, the characters. Its fun and silly while still feeling like quality. This to me was the Wachowski's last good film. Also, Speed Racer was released just as Lana Wachowski was navigating her own transition. She underwent gender confirmation surgery shortly after filming wrapped and avoided press junkets because the studio feared her transition might affect the film's "family-friendly" image. To me Racer X's story mirrors what Lana was going through and was a coming out story in disguise. Is Racer X’s masked existence, where he lives as a stranger to protect those he loves, meant to represent the experience of being in the closet while still longing for family connection?

Speed Racer is a work of art which unabashedly lives in its own world but somehow feels relatable with its many themes and deep emotional roots. The racing, color pallet, and technology are about as far from reality as possible but the family relationships, coming-of-age struggles, and large corporate corruption feel as real to the viewer as they do to the Racer Family. A true masterpiece.

On the surface, what may seem like an overly colorful world about cars that crash into one another, Speed Racer, is really a story about perseverance in the face of loss and disillusionment. Words cannot accurately describe the joy, frustration, and courage on display in this film and it is truly a must-see.
