To me most of what you see is just ridiculous Hollywood nonsense, and tired old tropes about impossibly perfect people with cartoon personalities and unrealistic racing. Rush is certainly not perfect, but it comes close. The cars look good, the period facts about the safety (or lack thereof) of that era and the risks drivers took back then is spot on. Sure there are some un-needed Hollywood embellishments but they get the emotional aspects right. Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl are both charismatic and believable as the two lead characters, but the physical and emotional trauma each of them portrayed is indeed worthy of being the center of attention here. For all of James Hunt’s charisma and his living life on the edge it was easily Lauda who proved to be the true champion in life, and in history. Human beings have an alarming proclivity to gravitate towards the more attractive and palatable people in life, but it’s people who are truly dedicated to their craft and focused who are truly worthy of the championships and legacy they earn. If you want to watch a movie about Formula One do yourself a favor and ignore the more recent Brad Pitt cartoon being pumped up by social media. This is the movie that deserves more attention.

Zwei Leben auf der Überholspur: Anfang der 70er Jahre kämpfen die höchst unterschiedlichen Rivalen Niki Lauda und James Hunt um den Aufstieg in den Rennfahrer-Olymp. Während der disziplinierte Lauda ehrgeizig an seiner Karriere feilt, stürzt sich Naturtalent Hunt ins glamouröse Jetset-Leben. Ihre Rivalität tragen sie nicht nur in spektakulären Rennen aus, sondern auch in heftigen Wortgefechten jenseits der Rennbahn. Bis zum legendären Rennen 1976 am Nürburgring, der gefährlichsten aller Rennstrecken, steht Lauda auf dem ersten Tabellenplatz. Doch auf regennasser Fahrbahn baut er einen dramatischen Crash, seine Frau Marlene bangt um sein Leben. Mit schier übermenschlichem Willen kämpft er sich zurück und tritt nur wenige Wochen später zu einem erneuten Showdown mit Hunt in Japan an. Wieder regnet es stark, das Rennen soll abgebrochen werden, doch beide Rivalen liefern sich ein atemberaubendes Duell.
