While this story is based on real people, some of the stories are generalized and some of the characters are added but could still depict situations in a border town.

Juli 2025Though it follows a pretty standard inspirational teacher drama template, Eugenio Derbez’s performance has enough charisma and charm to transform the overly familiar plot into a heartwarming crowd pleaser. Winner of the Festival Favorite Award at the 2023 Sundance and deservedly so as it’s probably one of my favorite dramas of the fest. It has a traumatic turn in the last act that feels rather out of place with the rest of the film. It is based on a true story though, so I can’t fault it too much for it’s inclusion if it in fact happened as depicted. Really enjoyable watch, though. The child actors gave impressive performances and really work to get you emotionally invested in the school. Jennifer Trejo’s Paloma in particular was delightful. Worth checking out.

Die Sechstklässler der Jose Urbina Lopez-Grundschule in Matamoros staunen nicht schlecht als die erste Unterrichtsstunde ihres neuen Lehrers Sergio Juarez (gespielt von Latin-Megastar Eugenio Derbez) beginnt. Sie gelten als leistungsschwächste Schüler Mexikos und ihre Welt ist geprägt von Gewalt, Vernachlässigung und Korruption. Im Klassenzimmer herrscht eine Atmosphäre der Härte und Disziplin. Doch Sergio wählt einen anderen Weg, um den Schülern aus der Sackgasse der Perspektivlosigkeit zu helfen: Er wendet sich mit Freiheit und Empathie an die Klasse, um ihre Neugierde, ihr Potenzial und vielleicht sogar ihr Genie zu entfesseln. Sergios' unkonventioneller Lehrplan stößt allerdings nicht nur auf überraschte und verwunderte Gesichter der Kinder, sondern auch auf wenig Akzeptanz und Unterstützung im Lehrerzimmer…
