Cronenberg's Weird and Bizarre Take on Early Body Horror Rabid is a classic piece of early horror that feels completely different from modern-day zombie films. Instead of a standard viral outbreak or supernatural curse, the infection is born out of a bizarre experimental plastic surgery procedure, which feels pretty odd to watch by today's standards. And let's be honest that strange phallic creature living under her armpit is peak weirdness; whose wild idea was that?! Lmfao. Some genuinely terrible acting all around, and it's a wonderfully bizarre, campy horror relic from the past.

Rabid is another jewel from my childhood—one I saw in a movie theater, and it left me with countless sleepless nights afterward. That kind of lingering fear? You don’t forget it. It’s the mark of horror done right. You can throw all the makeup and special effects in the world at a horror film, but if you miss the atmosphere, you’ve lost the soul of it. Rabid doesn’t just get it right—it balances everything perfectly. The dread is palpable, the tension relentless, and even the subtle hints of black comedy are woven in with finesse. Marilyn Chambers is a revelation. She takes her experience from adult films and channels it into something entirely different—her performance is magnetic, unsettling, and strangely sympathetic. She doesn’t just act; she transforms. Even by today’s standards, Rabid remains creepy, scary, and—yes—repulsive in the best possible way. It’s a film that gets under your skin and stays there. Cronenberg’s vision is disturbing, intelligent, and unforgettable.

“Please hold me. I’m dying of the cold.” - Rose. Cronenberg at his best. I love his early work. This was a great follow-up to Shivers, his directorial feature debut. 🎯 🧟‍♂️
