Jedoch scheinen selbst die ausgeklügeltsten Waffen an den übermächtigen Aliens zu scheitern. In ihrer Ratlosigkeit wenden sich die Streitkräfte der Erde an den abgehalfterten Ex-Piloten Raleigh Antrobus und seine unerfahrene Novizin Mako Mori, die ein scheinbar schlecht ausgerüstetes, älteres Modell der Jaeger gegen die Kaiju in den Kampf führen sollen. Die beiden werden zur letzten Hoffnung gegen die übermächtige apokalyptische Gewalt aus dem All.
