Um die Kaiju zu bekämpfen, wird eine spezielle Waffe hergestellt: Gigantische Roboter namens Jaeger, die durch zwei Piloten gesteuert werden, deren Gehirne durch eine neurale Brücke ebenfalls miteinander verknüpft werden. Jedoch scheinen selbst die ausgeklügeltsten Waffen an den übermächtigen Aliens zu scheitern. In ihrer Ratlosigkeit wenden sich die Streitkräfte der Erde an den abgehalfterten Ex-Piloten Raleigh Antrobus und seine unerfahrene Novizin Mako Mori, die ein scheinbar schlecht ausgerüstetes, älteres Modell der Jaeger gegen die Kaiju in den Kampf führen sollen. Die beiden werden zur letzten Hoffnung gegen die übermächtige apokalyptische Gewalt aus dem All.
