Another excellent horror in a year filled with excellent horror movies. I went into this movie totally blind, and so I was able to enjoy the twists and turns of the plot. The first half in particular is very tense and mysterious, and it definitely was getting to me. The movie does rely a bit on jump scares, but it also creates a strong atmosphere that is heightened by the few jumps, leaving the viewer to just guess when the next shoe will drop. As the movie progresses and you start to figure out the secrets behind everything, I think some of the tension and scares get deflated, and I was able to predict some of the larger events. It still feels very fresh, though, and the inevitability of the plot is a function of how well designed and foreshadowed everything is. The use of shadows throughout is great. I constantly looked at the background, trying to parse out any outlines. The acting was pretty good, especially from Carolyn Bracken. A very intriguing movie worth your time.

    BEST horror of 2024

A nice, concise and tight horror that feels fresh and inventive in comparison to the standard beat of Hollywood jump-scare-ridden sequels and spiritual successors. Oddity doesn't have a large cast of characters, nor is there a large variance of scene locations, but I believe its budget constraints seemed to work more in its favor than against it. There's just enough context and background to make the driving action effective but not so much where the film ever feels lulling or redundant. It plagues its viewers with long, study, focused instances of terror rather than quick, vapid jump scares. It's stripped down and lean and its ergonomic cast and set of locations only makes it more claustrophobic and unsettling.

Genuinely unsettling, and with some very thought-provoking scenes. One of the best horror films of the year.

Oddity is clearly a well-crafted film, and I can understand why it connected with so many horror fans. Damian Mc Carthy builds an intriguing mystery around a murdered woman, her blind twin sister, and a collection of supposedly cursed objects, with a wooden mannequin that quickly becomes the film's most memorable image. Carolyn Bracken delivers a strong dual performance, and the film benefits from confident direction that knows exactly how much information to withhold at any given moment. There are several genuinely effective sequences throughout, particularly when the story allows the audience's imagination to do more work than the screenplay itself. That said, I found myself appreciating Oddity more than actively enjoying it. The mystery is interesting enough to sustain the runtime, but I never became particularly invested in the characters or the eventual revelations, which left the payoff feeling smaller than the buildup. The film is undoubtedly stylish and technically accomplished, yet it never fully escaped the feeling that I was watching a cleverly constructed puzzle rather than a story I was emotionally engaged with. Horror fans who enjoy restrained supernatural mysteries will likely get more out of it than I did, but while I admired much of the craftsmanship on display, the overall experience left me more impressed than captivated.

Im going to have nightmares about the creepy wooden dude. The entire movie is very unsettling. One of the best horror movies of 2024.

That wooden guy freaked me out so much I had to turn on the light halfway through.

And that's how horror should be: disturbing, uncomfortable, peculiar, strange, terrifying...

decent jump scares, decent tension but I found the story to be fairly boring and the movie itself seemed confused about the story it was trying to tell. letterboxd: FilmPhanPA

I'm writing this after my second viewing. I must knock it down from 5 to 4 stars but it's still a really good movie. It's different, really fucking different but in a good way. The acting is great, the ending a masterclass, and the reason why I was swayed to 5 stars after my first viewing, the setting beautiful. All in all a great movie. On the technical side of things, there is a blur that was implemented on Caroline Mentons face early in the movie. She must have gotten a skin condition during a reshoot or something and they wanted to blur that out but my god... That was the worst blur I believe I have ever seen in a movie. There is one other effect I do not want to spoil but that one was absolutely horrid as well. The 80s want their effects back. CGI isn't the strong suite of this movie. The suspense is great and when you finally see what happened to Dani, yeah... That one got me a little. Absolute masterclass that scene. I can full heartedly recommend this movie to any horror or thriller fan. It has it's weaknesses, especially in the technical department but other than that one of the better movies of this decade.
