Notorious is the kind of movie you picture in your head when you envision an old Hollywood production. While it’s straight forward storytelling is timeless, there’s a lot here that is quite dated. Some of it charming, some of it not. The soundstage production will often have you forgetting this tale takes place in Rio. The sets are produced with great care and opulence. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are great on screen together, but the chemistry isn't always there. I’m sure the film code nerfed some of their ability as this is a common trait of the time. Its story telling is honestly kind of bizarre and mostly interesting if you stay focused, but I fear for most modern audiences it will come across as dry. The actual filming style and character blocking comes across as mostly flat, again, a product of its time. Although, there is definitely some shots here that are elevated through your traditional Hitchcock flair. Highlights for me were a tracking shot of a teacup to Ingrid’s character and the final shot of the movie with two silhouettes in a doorframe. Love how much it can communicate while showing something so simple.

This is about my fourth viewing of "Notorious" (1946). By the GOAT director, Mr. Alfred Hitchcock, (1899-1980).

Not very beautiful, cozy, fun or engaging. It's about cold war espionage, which doesn't feel like a serious threat.. It's unrelatable nonsense.

Not my favorite Hitchcock but still good. Little too heavy on the romance. Stubborn couple in a high stake situation.

Watched this after reading a list of the top spy movies of all time. While the film showcases wonderful camera work and often clever use of innuendo, Cary Grant's restrained performance as Mr. Devlin leaves a wide romantic gap between he and his love interest, Alicia. The gap proves a little too much to be be fully closed by Ingrid Bergman, who does much of the romantic weightlifting in this film along with a terrific performance from Claude Rains as Sebastian. It's a good spy movie, but not top twenty.

Classic Hitchcock tension with fantastic performance from Claude Raines. It seems to be a film I have missed and really enjoyed
