Such a Great War film, great references to actual events, good acting, great writing

I really enjoyed this movie when it came out but hadn’t been drawn back to it for a few years. I decided to give it another watch the other day and found that it’s improved with time. The story was great, the special effects were really well done, and the stress you feel as a viewer in the face of insurmountable odds is something the director deserves credit for. It’s not a Saving Private Ryan-quality WWII movie, but definitely a great film to depict the terrible position the U.S. was in on the Pacific front. A perfect balance of wartime stress, emotional connection, and loss—with heroes of the time rising and falling at a perfect pace. The Greatest Generation deserves our admiration for what they accomplished.

Woody is atrocious, Dennis Quaid is awful, most of the dialogue is awful and the CGI is beyond terrible. Having said that, it's still a pretty decent watch.

    Looks pretty stunning in 4k!

Put some great acting talent into a technical showpiece that suffers from some of the quickest aging CGI effects to date and you'll see a lost opportunity to revisit one of histories greatest naval battles. Sadly, there's not much to learn about history here, and the drama is lost in the glitz. Perhaps a Lucas-like special edition down the road fixing the terrible CGI may give it a rebirth, but the writing will probably hold it back even then.

I love war movies, in particular events taken place in WWII. Midway captures the feel of a naval sea battle to emerse you in the combat with some amazing visuals and killer Atmos audio track. Highly recommended.

CGI is a bit fake looking at times but otherwise a good watch. If you like anything military or aviation like myself than this is a must watch. Based of true events, I thoroughly enjoy it.

I enjoyed watching this remake again. The visual effects are a huge upgrade when compared to the original, of course. The acting isn't bad, considering the actors are portraying real people in many instances. I thought Dennis Quad's makeup made him look a bit young for his portrayal of Admiral Halsey, but that is on me. Sometimes I get stuck on little things that really don't matter.

“Pearl Harbor is the greatest intelligence failure in American history” - Edwin Layton Not bad, but I am sticking with the ‘76 original.

Good battle visuals but the ending felt very rushed and sudden. It was repetitive, so if you REALLY enjoy dogfights, fireballs, and watching sailors smoke cigarettes, this movie is for you. Otherwise it’s worth a watch but I wouldn’t dedicate a night to it.

Really good movie although I think the choice to go go a very polished cliche look at the battle took away from it a little, perhaps a more gritty realistic look at the battles would have aided better. Some of the dialogue was very cliche also which I wasn't a fan of, but all in all it was a good movie 🙂

Watching Midway (2019) felt like stepping into a digital war museum—loud, proud, and packed with spectacle. Roland Emmerich doesn’t hold back on the visual effects, and while some of the CGI feels over-polished, the aerial combat scenes are undeniably thrilling. The film tries hard to honor the real-life heroes of the Battle of Midway, and I respect its commitment to historical accuracy, even if the storytelling sometimes gets lost in the noise. Ed Skrein’s portrayal of Lt. Dick Best is bold, if a bit cartoonish, and Woody Harrelson brings gravitas as Admiral Nimitz. The dialogue can be stiff, and the emotional depth doesn’t quite reach the level of Saving Private Ryan, but it’s still a solid tribute to courage under fire. Based on my own viewing, I’d give it a 3.6 out of 5. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a respectable salute to one of WWII’s most pivotal battles.

Solid war movie. Planes go pew pew. Not very realistic but historically accurate with artistic liberties. Good enough for a second watch when you're bored.

A true documentary would bore most modern audiences to tears. This movie is a cartoon, an expository-heavy collection of nonsense stories centered around the pivotal Midway theater. It would be simply impossible to accurately portray the events or the people as they really happened, and as they really behaved to a modern audience. The Pearl Harbor scene where enemy planes are literally flying between battleships 25’ above the surface is pure 6th grade-level realism, because some Hollywood suit thought “it would look cool”. In one scene a sailor almost refuses to shimmy across a rope to save his life just because his hands were slightly singed? Were Ernie and Bert that guy’s squad leaders? Did Big Bird train him? The honest truth is that even if the producers wanted to create a historically accurate depiction of the true events, and highlight some of the truly heroic and gut-wrenching decisions those kids made (yes, they were kids back then - 18-24 year olds with more fortitude than you’d find in people today) they wouldn’t be able to maintain the attention of today’s audiences. Just because the people involved in this conflict didn’t wear capes and tights and fly around like super-heroes doesn’t make what they did unworthy of respect is an unfortunate reflection of today’s society. I give it one and a half stars (instead of 1) only because I know this was loosely based on real events, no matter how poorly that was represented here. If you want Sesame Street drama then watch this, if you want anything else avoid this garbage.
