Kathryn Bigelow tried to paint it in a noble light, but the beautiful film she delivered is still a story about inept communists doing what they do best: epically failing while killing all of the people. Now that I think about it, why did she give these marxists such soft treatment? Lord knows if this movie was about ze German national socialists the tone of the whole picture would be different. Alas, I’ve ranted enough… So, I suppose it’s worth a view if you’re in the mood for another historical war drama that isn’t about World War 2 or Vietnam.
- Zokkiie15. April 2026It’s tense in a quiet, uncomfortable way, and that works in its favor. Nothing feels overly flashy — just a steady build of pressure that keeps you hooked. The performances are solid and give it a grounded, serious tone that makes it feel more real than most films like this. Some of the inaccuricies brings it down, like the drama between the captains which was uncessasary, and not keeping the right names of the dying crew was disrepsectful, they deserved to be named. Still worth watching, just feels like it didn’t fully trust how powerful the real story already was.

Der russische Vorzeige-Kapitän Alexei Vostrikov übernimmt an Stelle von Skipper Mikhail Polenin auf Geheiß des Kreml das Kommando auf dem neuen Atom-U-Boot K-19. Unter Vostrikov muss die schlecht geschulte Mannschaft wenig später mit dem unausgereiften Schiff auslaufen. Und so kommt es schon auf der Jungfernfahrt zur Katastrophe, denn der Reaktorkern beginnt sich langsam aufzuheizen.
