Selfish people, bullies, victims, uncaring mothers and quite possibly a severely depressed man about 40 years late to his stardom. George Reeves had everything Hollywood wanted in a movie star, but not in the time he existed. In the 1930-1945 he would have been a mega-star, boiler-plate plunked into every cookie cutter Hollywood rehash of the same tired old tropes. But in his lifetime he was stuck in the doldrums of television, which in the late ‘50s and ‘60s was a graveyard for has-beens and “never have beens”. He had big dreams that faded fast, like they do for 90% of the people who venture into that environment. There people are used and discarded like yesterday’s newspaper without so much as an after-thought. People are products in this landscape - used, abused, exploited and run through every wringer in every possible way. This movie paints several sad tales of what might have happened with Reeves. Was he suicidal? Was he killed by a jealous ex-lover, or perhaps a selfish younger girlfriend who never quite understood him? Was he put down by a Hollywood heavy hitter, someone with money, a dark past and plenty of reasons and capabilities to carry out a hit? Affleck does a decent job of painting the many faces of his character, lending to the mystery of what might have really happened. Adrian Brody takes us through the many versions of this event as a fictional detective who has his own problems, yet it’s done in a very convincing and heartfelt way. This is no thrown together hash of off-the-wall theories, it’s an interesting story of many flawed people interacting within the Hollywood environment of exploitation and selfishness.

Am 16. Juni 1959 erschüttert ein Todesfall Hollywood. George Reeves - gefeierter TV-Darsteller - wird erschossen aufgefunden. Für die Polizei ist der Fall bald klar: Reeves, der ständig mit dem "Stählernen" identifiziert wurde, keine Arbeit mehr fand und sogar aus Filmen herausgeschnitten wurde, hat Selbstmord begangen. Doch Reeves' Mutter gibt sich mit dieser Theorie nicht zufrieden und heuert Privatdetektiv Louis Simo an, um die Wahrheit an Tag zu bringen. Schon bald findet Simo gegen alle Hindernisse in der Schattenwelt Hollywoods heraus, daß Reeves, trotz Verlobung mit dem Starlet Leonore Lemmon eine Affäre mit Toni, der Frau des MGM-Studioverantwortlichen Eddie Mannix, hatte und Mannix hat keinerlei Interesse daran, dass diese Wahrheit ans Licht kommt. Schon bald selbst mehr an dem Fall interessiert als seine Auftraggeberin, bohrt Simo immer tiefer und stößt auf drei Varianten: Selbstmord, Mord oder Unfall...
