I didn’t expect much going in, maybe a few laughs, some over the top action, but what I got was a bullet fueled fever dream that felt like Crank, Scott Pilgrim and The Running Man had a baby raised on energy drinks and Reddit flame wars. Daniel Radcliffe, bless him, throws himself into the role of Miles, a keyboard warrior who wakes up with guns bolted to his hands and a bounty on his head. It’s absurd, it’s loud and it knows exactly what it is. Samara Weaving’s Nix is a punk rock terminator with eyeliner and zero chill and every scene she’s in is a blast of chaos and charisma. The film doesn’t waste time on subtlety. It’s all about speed, style and snark. The editing is caffeinated, the soundtrack is relentless and the violence is cartoonishly gleeful. It’s not trying to be deep, it’s trying to be a good time. And it succeeds.

Das Leben von Videospiel-Entwickler Miles folgt einem eingefahrenen Trott. Beruflich steckt er in einer Sackgasse und privat trauert er immer noch seiner Exfreundin Nova nach. Sein Leben nimmt eine dramatische Wendung, als er eines Tages im Darknet stöbert und die falschen Leute verärgert. Prompt stehen Mitglieder der geheimnisvollen Gang Skizm vor seiner Tür und zwingen ihn, an einem modernen Gladiatorenkampf auf Leben und Tod teilzunehmen. Als wäre das nicht schon schlimm genug, werden ihm zwei Waffen an die Hände „getackert“, die es noch schwieriger machen, gegen den aktuellen Champion Nix zu bestehen.
