Gunan is a simple shepherd in love with the beautiful Oyuun, daughter of Khan Iribsyn. When Iribsyn, intending to marry Oyuun, organizes a competition, Gunan begs the Khan to allow him to compete with other suitors from among the noble princes. Khan gives his daughter away in marriage. At the competitions, the shepherd Gunan Bator amuses the prince-suitors. The Khan orders the shepherd to defeat the seven-headed Mangus.
