What makes the film so special is its understated melancholy. It is neither loud nor particularly dramatic. It lives through glances, pauses, nighttime streets, empty rooms, table football, small conversations, and an atmosphere that is difficult to put into words: being young, wanting to be free, and at the same time beginning to sense that this freedom is already slipping away. Hamburg almost becomes a fourth main character. Not the tourist version of Hamburg, but the nocturnal, slightly empty, industrial city: streetlights, backyards, the harbor, bars, and that peculiar feeling of driving through a city late at night while the rest of the world is already asleep. On a personal note, the film has a very special connection for me. One of the scenes takes place in the emergency department at AK Wandsbek, where I worked countless shifts for years. That alone gives the film an additional layer of familiarity and memory for me. Overall, Absolute Giganten feels deeply personal, melancholic and nostalgic. It leaves you missing something you cannot quite name — perhaps something you did not even realize you missed until the film reminded you of it.

Die drei Hamburger Jungs Floyd, Ricco und Walter sind dicke Freunde. Walter ist Lackierer in einer abenteuerlichen Hinterhofwerkstatt, Ricco hält sich für einen großen Rapper und jobbt in einem Schnellimbiss. Für Floyd beginnt ein neuer Lebensabschnitt: nachdem er eine Bewährungsstrafe abgebüßt hat, kann er auf einem Containerschiff anheuern. Wahrscheinlich aus Angst vor der Reaktion seiner Freunde teilt er diesen seine Entscheidung erst einen Tag vorher mit. Nach anfänglicher Niedergeschlagenheit genießen die drei noch einmal richtig ihren letzten Abend in der Hafenstadt Hamburg. Dabei erleben sie sowohl lustige als auch traurige und dramatische Geschichten, die die Freundschaft der drei und die Melancholie des Abschieds einfangen.
