eXistenZ
- Tassio Lorran Cunha de Jesusvor 22 Std.Watching David Cronenberg's eXistenZ (1999) is not consuming science fiction; it is witnessing a prophetic documentary about the fall of the human spirit. Pop culture has trained us to fear a hygienic apocalypse, made of metal and neon lights, where machines gain consciousness to destroy us from the outside in. But Cronenberg reveals the terrifying truth: the real end is not the machine coming to life, but the human voluntarily embracing death in life. We have reached the "Last Sphere of Humanity." Technology is no longer an external tool; it has become an organ of our body. The simulacrum has merged with biology. Through a visual and semiotic excavation of this work, I record here the milestones of this degradation, so that our house never loses the compass of objective reality: 1. The Filthy Throne and the Umbilical Cord The system does not elevate us; it parasitizes us. Unlike clean and aseptic spaceships, the organic connection in the film takes place in the back of a dirty gas station. The man who accepts the "bio-port" (the mark of the system, a hole drilled into his own spine) is thrown onto a filthy throne, reduced to disposable hardware. The cable that connects him to the delirium has the texture of an umbilical cord—a brutal metaphor for "voluntary anesthesia." The adult human regresses, seeking the comfort of a synthetic womb, while the machine drains their nefesh (vital breath) to keep the game running. 2. The Serpent and the Burning Ecclesia The ancient narrative of Eden repeats itself, but with new idols. Allegra Geller, the game's creator, is the tactile Serpent. While the "last pure man" has his biology profaned in the gas station, her hand gropes the outside wall with reptilian movements—stalking the Fall. The sacred is subverted: she calls her mutant console "my sweet little baby" inside a rural church, a place once devoted to real transcendence. Later, we see the pews of that same church thrown into the wilderness and the temple in flames. The system doesn't just want to give us a second life; it demands that our first life—our community, our faith, and our reality—burns and is abandoned. 3. The Profane Communion and the Hijacking of Free Will The illusion extracts its toll by destroying morality and natural repulsion. We see the pinnacle of madness in the Chinese restaurant, where the man devours a two-headed mutant amphibian. The aberration, casually called "the signs of the times" by the creator, is swallowed. He feels disgust, but cannot stop, justified by a "game urge". It is the exact portrait of modern algorithmic addiction: the hijacking of free will, where the code dictates the desires of the flesh. Even worse: the bones of this meal become a weapon, and the firing pin is the protagonist's own dental prosthesis. The system reads our flaws and uses our own artificiality as ammunition to destroy us. 4. Ontological Amnesia The final abyss reveals itself when the game advances from eXistenZ to tranCendenZ. The machine now demands divine status, replacing true spiritual transcendence with a digital playpen. The system is so perverse that it swallows even the resistance against it—you can play at being a rebel, as long as you fight within the rules of the simulation. The film ends with a black screen and the most terrifying question a soul can ask: "Are we still in the game?" I leave this record for my children and the generations to come: protect your biology, your silence, your attention, and your worship. Never normalize the monstrous. Never accept the "bio-port" of a culture that promises omnipotence but delivers only slavery in a filthy armchair. Guard reality. Whoever loses this compass spends eternity wandering in the labyrinth of their own mind, never knowing if they are alive or dead. Allegra Geller, a criadora do jogo, é a Serpente tátil. 3. Guardem a realidade.
- flavo433. Januar 2026eXistenZ is a mind‑bending slice of sci‑fi that showcases David Cronenberg’s fascination with the blurred boundaries between technology and flesh. Starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law, the film dives into the world of virtual‑reality gaming—but instead of glossy CGI, it embraces tactile, unsettling practical effects that make its bio‑tech creations feel disturbingly real. The story is deliberately disorienting, filled with twists, loops, and shifting layers of reality that keep you questioning what’s genuine and what’s part of the game. Its unconventional ending only deepens that sense of uncertainty, leaving viewers with the lingering unease Cronenberg is famous for. While this is one of his more restrained works—less extreme than his body‑horror landmarks—it’s still a compelling entry in his filmography. eXistenZ remains a clever, provocative thriller that challenges perception and rewards viewers who enjoy narratives that twist themselves inside out.
- Daniel Gustavsson12. Oktober 2024I will admit that I was torn here if I wanted to give this a 4 or a 5. The movie is absolutely not perfect, and some of the editing is very confusing. The acting can be... weird for lack of a better word. But I went with a 5 in the end because for some reason this movie really stuck with me. The themes are so great. The risks it takes. Some of the weird stuff (the gun for example). The ending. They are all so brilliant. It's a bit cheesy at times but that just makes the whole thing more geeky (and hence fitting for this). I also think the movie brings a lot of food for thoughts, especially after that ending. I love this movie.
