Honestly it is worth the half the standard rating. It’s almost like the iconic movie which is great if you want to make a reboot, but it’s the details and the personality of the movie as a whole is what throws me off. Let’s talk about the important one, the necronomicon. The cover is just the beginning as the chanting are as nostalgic as the classics. But the pictures, the pages, everything within that book screams parody and when I mean by everything, I mean they added contents about what’s going to happen next which threw me off because why are we in one of those step by step horror movie cliches? Where’s the demons? The creatures? And the most important element of the evil dead franchise, where’s the comedy? If you want a fresh restart of your favorite franchise with the same gore, blood, and screams, they did it. But be warned, it doesn’t have that comedic/nostalgic feeling to it.

i don’t know, something about this film made it feel exhausting to get through. the violence is as brutal as it’s ever been in this series, and there’s a lot of personality behind the lens; there’s one rotating shot of a deadite choking someone out as they crawl along a wall and up a ceiling that had me grinning ear to ear. but the deadite humor isn’t really there, and despite it being the bleakest evil dead entry, it also didn’t feel tonally appropriate. if i wanted to watch a bleak demon possession film that revolved around family dynamics i would just watch when evil lurks, a superior film in every way. what genuinely sullied my experience though was that fuck ass post-credit scene. the enshittification of cinema includes moments like this, where it feels like mcu parody at best.

Worth keeping in the library, especially as the point where the franchise proved it could survive without Ash as the centre of gravity. Evil Dead 2013 is not my favourite version of this world, but it is one of the stronger modern horror remakes because it chooses a lane and commits to it completely. This is the serious one. Fede Álvarez takes the familiar cabin, book, woods, possession, and chainsaw material and pushes it towards practical-effects body horror rather than Raimi’s splatter-comedy madness. That will either be the appeal or the sticking point, depending on what I am in the mood for. It lacks the wild comic personality of the original trilogy, but it has a brutal physical presence that still holds up. Jane Levy is excellent as Mia. The addiction/detox setup gives the film a stronger reason for the characters to stay put and distrust her, which helps the story avoid some of the usual horror-film stupidity. The cabin design, Book of the Dead, sound, and gore effects all work well, and the blood-rain finale is ridiculous in the correct way. Main reservations: the supporting characters are underwritten, the violence sometimes crosses from intense into numbing, and the film can feel a little too grim for a franchise that has always had a streak of lunatic humour. Rewatch value is high if I want something nasty and full-blooded. Less so if I want the strange joy of Raimi and Campbell bouncing horror off the walls.

I have to give credit where it's due, remaking a movie as iconic as this is a pretty risky move. Fede Álvarez had a tough job, and I think he did a solid job creating something that feels like its own thing instead of just copying the original. The atmosphere is great, the practical effects are absolutely wild, and the gore is taken to such an extreme level that it almost becomes impressive. The movie has a real sense of commitment — it knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver. I actually watched about two thirds of this when it first came out, but the person I was watching it with couldn't handle the gore, so we ended up turning it off lol. Coming back to it, I completely understand why. It’s relentless. While it doesn’t have the same strange charm and personality as the original, it makes up for it with intensity, style, and some seriously memorable horror moments. A brave remake that doesn’t fully match the classic, but still deserves credit for how much it commits.

A rare remake that is a good as the original, think dawn of dead. Guessing who took the chainsaw was an added bonus

One of the rare horror remakes that actually works. Creepy, gory, and well done, with a strong performance from Jane Levy.

A PERFECT HORROR FILM. I revisit this movie yearly, and each time I love it even more. Not for the squeamish or weak-of-heart. You will squirm and love every second of it!

Been getting kind of hyped for the new Evil Dead Rise and figured I better catch up on this one which has been on my watchlist for a while. Man this movie rips!  It has some really excellent cinematic imagery, gruesome kills and fantastic looking effects. Only things keeping it from an even higher score is that it sometimes falls into the horror trap of characters making really dumb choices. Most of that can be forgiven, though, given how much fun this was. Bring on Rise…

Legit Reboot of the franchise. Some brutally awesome scenes

I gather that reading books is just a BAD MUFFUK'N IDEA! Judging from the Evil Dead movie series anyhow! Which is clearly... 100% accurate. We need to Fahrenheit 451 this bish, and BAN, THEN BURN ALL BOOKS to keep evil from entering this realm!
