Christopher Nolan has put the audience on the beaches of Dunkirk, on the fishing boats, and into the spitfires during the greatest evacuation of World War II. Only the most talented directors can sustain tension. An audience cannot be stressed for two hours unless the story being told is engrossing. It must capture the audience. Dunkirk needs almost no exposition - it is told by a single piece of paper. From there, the film explodes. Then, the tension and suspense begin and do not leave you until the film ends.

The acting is intentionally understated, which brings quiet heroism without ever giving a speech. These guys aren’t performing feelings; they’re surviving. You’re not “following a story”; you’re being dragged through an event with parts of the story told through tension rather than dialogue. The film isn’t trying to make you cry; it’s trying to make you feel trapped.

Denn durch die feindlichen Truppen auf der einen Seite und das Wasser auf der anderen scheint es keine Chance auf Überleben zu geben. Doch in Großbritannien ersinnt man eine kühne Rettungsmission, von der zuerst nur die wenigsten glauben, dass sie Aussicht auf Erfolg haben kann: Während die eingekesselten Soldaten, darunter Tommy, Alex und Gibson, am Boden ums Überleben kämpfen, sorgen RAF-Piloten wie Farrier in ihren Spitfires für Feuerschutz aus der Luft. Gleichzeitig eilen Zivilisten wie Mr. Dawson den eingekesselten Soldaten mit ihren kleinen Booten übers Wasser zu Hilfe.
