- Austin Burke2. November 2025Bugonia is a strange, albeit honest, examination of the human condition and a look at how trauma can dictate decision-making. At the same time, this is an often-insane dark comedy that kept me on the edge of my seat and provided one of the most fascinating experiences of the year. Lanthimos is in his bag with the visuals, cinematography, and ability to get the best out of two top-tier actors. Where we ultimately wind up will frustrate some, but the way this film approaches the journey was far more entertaining than even I expected.

It's one of those where you might (or might not) be able to predict the general ending yet still find it satisfying. Not to say it's predictable. It's more of a good critique on our modern world and the people who inhabit it.

Oktober 2026If you're not aware, this is an adaptation of the insane-genius Korean film Save the Green Planet (2003), but with wildly different characters and setting (2020s U.S. versus 1990s Korea). The problem with adapting a film with as much charm and wild creativity as Save the Green Planet, is that, absent similar wild genius, your film is going to come off a little flat in the obvious comparison, and this one does. It loses almost all of the humor and charm of its inspiration, and gains very little of its own. It's still a very good film, and speaks to the bleak U.S. service economy directly -- i.e., it's more directly relevant to us here in the belly of the beast. But it's just more direct and plain. But let me note what it *does* bring to the table. Save the Green Planet addressed an old image of our ruling class and high middle-management -- the decadent, supremely arrogant, and super-entitled 40-something male corporate CEO. Bugonia shows us the modern, wokified, diverse version, with an HR-coded perfect-in-every-way liberal woman corporate CEO, who maintains all the proper genuflection. Unlike our degenerate CEO in STGP, she's sober, she exercises, she's liberal and photogenic, and she's green. But like him, underneath she's still the same thing, objectively, to those underneath her. It's a facade. The facade we keep getting confused by today. This, of course, is an absolutely important update to address the new face of our "betters", and so the film does do what it's intended to do, and the final scene, which I won't spoil, is a masterstroke of criticism if you're watching for it. Highly recommended. But See STGP *after* you see this, if you haven't already.

Plemons and Stone bouncing off each other is pure pleasure from their deadpan volleys to the way each scene seems to tilt depending on who’s holding the power in the moment. I’m so glad I caught this in a theater, because it looks fantastic. The production design and those slightly skewed Yorgos compositions just pop on a big screen. And I loved that ending. From the moment Plemons teleports to the final shot, it’s Yorgos fully speaking my language. It’s strange, playful, and weirdly triumphant.
