- Austin Burke2. November 2025Bugonia is a strange, albeit honest, examination of the human condition and a look at how trauma can dictate decision-making. At the same time, this is an often-insane dark comedy that kept me on the edge of my seat and provided one of the most fascinating experiences of the year. Lanthimos is in his bag with the visuals, cinematography, and ability to get the best out of two top-tier actors. Where we ultimately wind up will frustrate some, but the way this film approaches the journey was far more entertaining than even I expected.
- Kevin Ward18. November 2025What a blast! Plemons and Stone bouncing off each other is pure pleasure from their deadpan volleys to the way each scene seems to tilt depending on who’s holding the power in the moment. I’m so glad I caught this in a theater, because it looks fantastic. The production design and those slightly skewed Yorgos compositions just pop on a big screen. And I loved that ending. From the moment Plemons teleports to the final shot, it’s Yorgos fully speaking my language. It’s strange, playful, and weirdly triumphant.
- EdmondZippo14. Juni 2026Dehumanising is bad, yet if I had to do it to a class of people, it would obviously be the rich and powerful. It's hard to remain positive when you're sort of conscious of the death machine that powers everyday life, and this film is all about that. We hurt each other, we hurt ourselves, we hurt the Earth. The profit motive drives everything. It would be oh, so very sweet to delegate responsibility to a tangible higher power, but alas... This film reminds me of a Michael Burns video in which he basically says (I think) that conspiracy theorists are right that there's something wrong with the world, but they're not going the right way with their thinking at all. Here, the thinking goes right, but there's no solace at the end. We're cancelled, as a species. But death comes from above, and it's almost liberating. In truth, we are responsible for our own demise, and as we look at the sky for answers, the abyss will gaze back at us, wordless and indifferent.
- Monkey See! Monkey Review!!8. Juni 2026TLDR: If you’re looking for something different, something that plays with familiar themes in an unexpected way, I’d definitely recommend giving Bugonia a watch. I went into Bugonia not really knowing what to expect, other than the fact that Emma Stone had shaved her head for the role. The moment I saw that teaser online, I knew I had to check it out. When an actor commits to a transformation like that, you anticipate a performance with real intensity and purpose—and she absolutely brings that. Seeing Jesse Plemons in the cast was another pleasant surprise. He’s one of those actors who consistently delivers but still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, at least in my opinion. His presence alone raised my expectations. What I appreciated most is how the film puts a fresh spin on the typical hostage‑or‑kidnapping narrative. I won’t spoil anything, but it definitely takes the genre in a direction I didn’t see coming. The acting and character development worked well for me, and the slow build kept me engaged. I do wish the movie had offered a bit more background context—especially leading up to the final twist. I’m someone who loves a strong backstory that ties everything together, so when a film leaves some of that out, it’s not a deal‑breaker, but it does leave me wanting more. Still, I liked how everything ultimately came together in the end.
- pirateglenu7. Juni 2026I didn’t know what I was getting into when I played this with my parents, and I was definitely confused at first. By then I probably spent half the movie laughing, meanwhile my parents are disappointed in my choice of movies. That should tell you something about this masterpiece. EMMA STONE THE ACTRESS YOU ARE!
- Joe G27. Januar 2026This is what The Killing of a Sacred Deer attempted to accomplish. The metaphor here is heavy-handed in the best possible way, pushed so far that it becomes destabilizing. At no point is it entirely clear whether the main character believes what he’s saying, is constructing the story for his idiot cousin, or is fully deluded by grief. That ambiguity is the point. What’s most unsettling is how often rational viewers will find themselves agreeing with him anyway. The film quietly exposes how thin the line is between delusion and clarity when systems are so obviously broken. Beneath the absurdity is a blunt message: we have far more in common with one another than with our corporate, alien, managerial overlords pretending to be human. It’s sharp, uncomfortable, and deeply controlled, the kind of film that doesn’t soften its intent for accessibility. Likely to be overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. This deserves to be considered among Yorgos Lanthimos’s best work. I’m a little tired of Emma Stone and think they need a break from working together though.
