In einer düsteren Welt behütet ein Mädchen mit langen weißen Haaren ein Ei. Sie streift durch ein Land, wo es keine Menschen zu geben scheint. Sie läuft durch ein Dorf, das nicht bewohnt zu sein scheint. Eines Tages trifft sie einen Wanderer. Nur widerspenstig schließen sich beide zusammen - zu einer Art "Arche Noah". "Es regnet 40 Tage und 40 Nächte. Alles stirbt. Die Tiere, der Mensch, das Wildtier. Nur Noah mit seinen Tieren blieb übrig. Er schickte eine Taube los, auf der Suche nach Land. Sie kam nicht zurück. Und so vergaßen sie einander, solange bis die Tiere zu Stein wurden." Der Film lebt von seinen Bildern. Die Bilder erzählen eine Geschichte. Genauso die wenigen Sätze des Wanderers, der das obige Zitat hervorbringt. Dazu kommt große Orchestermusik in all ihren Facetten. So werden lange "Standbilder" nicht langweilig, sondern werden untermalt von der passenden Musik. Ein Anime voller Fantasie, der sich in unseren Köpfen abspielt.

Then the story is clearer and the world with dead giants feels real and familiar somehow, only on multiple viewings can I give a better review.

They truly do not make this kind of stuff anymore. Mamoru Oshii proved early on in his career that he was and is one of the greatest pioneering minds of anime in the same vein as Hideaki Anno and Hayao Miyazaki. Watch the 4k remaster when it releases! I know I will.

- Trickermand5. September 2025Above all, this movie is an art piece. Not in the pretentious "this movie is art" way, but in the sense that it's like staring at a panting for 1h20m. This movie is boring. No, really, it's /boring/. But that doesn't mean it's not worth watching, I loved it, but keeping focus is hard, and focus should be kept. Don't watch this if you can't commit to being bored for the duration, because then you will get nothing from it. Do watch it in place of going to a museum today, and have an experience.
