Als sich ein unbekannter Flugkörper aus der Marsumlaufbahn der Erde nähert, wird schnell klar, dass es sich nicht um einen Asteroiden auf Kollisionskurs, sondern um eine außerirdische Invasion handelt! Der Flugkörper teilt sich kurz vor der Erdumlaufbahn in mehrere einzelne Raumschiffe auf und zerstört die ISS und Teile von New York City. Alles passiert blitzschnell und lässt keinen Raum für eine Verteidigungsstrategie. Der einzige Vorteil der Menschheit sind die für die Invasoren feindlichen Lebensbedingungen der Erde. Das US-Militär unter Führung von General Reed plant daher den entscheidenden Gegenschlag: Die Operation „Verbrannte Erde“. Sie soll den Invasoren jegliche Lebensgrundlage auf der Erde nehmen – allerdings wären die Auswirkungen auch für die Erdbevölkerung verheerend.
