I have trouble understanding how this movie failed to find an audience. When you look at this movie through the satirical lens that I think it was supposed to be watched through, it really comes into a better focus. It's all so over the top, because it was intended to be over the top. It was supposed to be Tom Cruise satirizing himself and the genre in general, and I for one really enjoyed it. It should be rated way higher than 49% on Rotten Tomatoes IMO.

A solid story adapted from the novel of the same name written by Robert B. Parker. The movie suffers from a combination of poor casting (Zellweger) and wooden often stiff performances which is likely a product of Harris’s directing because this movie has far too much talent, including Harris himself, to be this middling. Regardless it’s still a nice period authentic western.
I’ve always found this movie to be criminally underrated and overlooked. It’s a solid adventure tale told from an interesting perspective with some solid performances. I truly enjoyed this one.

A brilliant comedy written by Mel Brooks that harkens back to glory days of early network variety television. I loved this movie when I saw it a teenager and I still love it as an adult. Highly recommend!

I’ve always been confused as to why this movie is poorly reviewed. It’s a heartfelt drama, surprisingly emotional at times and the performances ring true and the characters and relationships feel real. Robert Duvall instantly improves any movie he’s in, and Travolta is solid as the everyman with a special gift. Definitely worth a watch.
