- Kaiji
I just finished both seasons of Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor and I’m honestly overwhelmed with emotion. I knew I was getting into a gambling anime. I wasn’t expecting one of the most painfully realistic depictions of human beings I’ve seen in a while. Kaiji understands human flaws, but it also understands human virtues. People are greedy, cowardly, selfish, desperate, irrational, and incredibly easy to manipulate when they’re afraid. But they can also be compassionate. They can form genuine camaraderie with complete strangers. They can risk themselves for somebody who has nothing to offer them in return. Sometimes all a person needs is for someone else to look at them when they’re at their absolute lowest and still believe they’re worth something. And Kaiji himself is such a perfect protagonist for this kind of story because he isn’t some calculating super-genius who always has everything under control. He fucks up. He trusts people he shouldn’t. He gets emotional. He gets scared. He gets cocky. He loses. Constantly. But he keeps getting back up. There’s something incredibly moving about watching this perpetual loser slowly become almost a champion of other losers. Kaiji understands these people because he IS one of them. These aren’t the winners of society. They’re debtors, failures, addicts, fuckups, poor people, desperate people, people who made bad decisions and people who simply got chewed up by circumstances. And the series refuses to treat their suffering as proof that they deserve it. The gambling itself starts feeling like a metaphor for simply existing under capitalism. Everyone is gambling all the time. Your money, your labor, your health, your future, your relationships, sometimes literally your life. The people at the bottom are encouraged to gamble because they’re desperate for a way out, while the people at the top can turn that desperation into entertainment and profit. And if you finally win? Congratulations. Here’s another game. That’s the part that really fucked me up. There’s this Sisyphus-like quality to Kaiji’s existence. He pushes the boulder up the hill again and again and again. Every victory feels like it should finally mean freedom, but somehow the blood sucking vampire called capitalism finds another way to send that fucking rock rolling back down. And yet the show doesn’t make me feel like struggling is pointless. Almost the opposite. There’s something profoundly human about Kaiji continuing anyway. He cries, screams, panics, fucks up, gets betrayed, loses everything, finds other people at the bottom, and pushes that goddamn boulder again. Maybe that’s why I came away loving him so much. He’s the champion of the losers. And unfortunately, a lot of us are losers in this soul crushing game. What an incredible fucking show. “The future is in our hands.”Kaiji - Backrooms
The Backrooms is interesting as hell. The entertainment from the movie depends on what you came for... Is it scary? Eh, not really. Is it interesting and full of ideas? Very much so. The reveal of the creature left me thinking: "That's it?" But the entire idea of the Backrooms is more unsettling than the creature itself. Watching it, I was never really scared of the movie but I know if EYE was personally in there, I'd be crying like a baby. haha But yeah, pretty good movie.Backrooms - Thriller: A Cruel Picture
Review varies on which version you watch. The original/uncut Swedish version, features full on penetration during the rape scenes when Frigga is older... But turns away and censors the final kill. The camera will cut away. You'd imagine with full penetration especially during such a horrible act, the vengeful kill will not hold back... But it does. While the US version, removes the full penetration, making the cut away from the final kill feel "okay". As a person who loves revenge films (when the revenge is worth the pain the character went through), I can't recommend Thriller: A Cruel Picture's original version to anyone who wants justice for Frigga (One Eye)Thriller: A Cruel Picture - Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider
It’s pretty looking, but it’s not really for me. It threw me off the main character is already unrealistically stronger than Kamen Rider… I mean he was fighting bears and doing above average human feats… I was hoping for someone I suppose realistically trying to be Kamen Rider. A better way to put it, I was hoping this was a “Kick-Ass” version of Kamen Rider, where we see the main character legitimately try to be that character, getting his ass kicked dealing with real criminals, still coming back to fight evil, eventually prevailing in true Kamen Rider spirit. I know many enjoy this show so I would still recommend it to some folks but this show just isn’t for me.Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider
