I pulled it up out of the weeds a little bit, but the reason I started wanting to write it is that I feel like the use of morality as a way of controlling people has become much more powerful than the use of morality to help people order their lives and society better. Like, we have a president who has been openly unfaithful to every wife he's ever had, but to many he's seen as a moral actor because he promises to control people in ways that feel like a moral imperative to some people. I don't like it!! But as I got into the subject I realized that perhaps it is worth saying that this project here and this community has a deep morality. How We Form OpinionsIt's always easy to tell the simplest story, and of course none of these stories are simple, but I hate when conversation gets driven into the places where we feel we need to protect our identities and keep us safe within our communities. We should not need to feel that way about things that are either obviously true or obviously in need of open minds and more data. I feel like you could write a whole book on time zones and I bet someone probably already did. Just the rabbit holes I went down for this one video were extremely satisfying!!! Are Languages Alive?Are we a substrate on which they exist? What happens if they continue to get more complex? One thing that is different is they do not compete inside of the ecosystem...or maybe a language is a whole ecosystem and individual units of the language do compete...sometimes outcompeting each other, which is what happens when words survive while others fall out of use. Dangit...I should've thought of that before I finished the video.... Maybe languages aren't alive but WORDS are? Is a language a superorganism of words? We Never Know What Anything MeansIt's very nice to feel like we might have some idea of where we are heading, even if we feel like the place we are heading is terrible. But the thing every examination of history provides me with is a complete lack of certainty beyond even a pretty modest time horizon. So, y'know, I guess just...do what you can with what you have, and remember that you can't really do anything with it without moments of joy and a life of connection.
