Geißendörfer, who later invented Lindenstraße, had the idea for the series and directed all the episodes. He named his hero the English word for lobster because he wanted to allude to its hard shell and soft core. A drawn lobster was always shown in the opening credits. Peter Berneis and Karl Heinz Willschrei wrote almost all of the books.
