Stephan Derrick is a chief inspector with the Munich police who must solve murder cases with his assistant, Harry Klein. This show is based more on psychological methods to find out who the murderer was than on action scenes or car chases. Derrick prefers to talk to people and learn more about their personalities, so he considers the phone a vital instrument.

A heated discussion arises between the two young people because Erich does not want to marry Helga and, on the contrary, tries to buy the girl's silence. The next morning Helga's lifeless body is fished out of a pond.

Derrick and Harry suspect that the killer is acting on the edge of the railway line because it is someone who works in that environment.
