Dasha, a seventeen-year-old pupil of a provincial orphanage, becomes a victim of the rich swindler Bogdanov. To protect his property from confiscation, he gives Dasha off as his illegitimate daughter, whom he sought out in order to atone for past sins and give his daughter a prestigious foreign education. In fact, Bogdanov wants to transfer his property to the girl and get rid of her.
