Kropsdele bliver smidt i en sø, for mange patienter mister livet og to ansatte er tilsyneladende blevet myrdet, så Dalziel har sin sag for. Og han bliver ikke mindre bekymret over, at Pascoe er indlagt på hospitalet efter en trafikulykke. Den gang forsvandt den hovedmistænkte sporløst og er stadig ikke fundet. Men der er mere mystik omkring den private zoo end ved første øjekast.
