Florrie refuses to serve Christine a loaf when she calls into the Corner Shop and Val gives her the cold shoulder. Lucille is upset when Harry shows little enthusiasm over the meal

Swindley asks Fred Jackson to remove his poster advertising Gamma Garments' sale as it's been called off due to lack of interest.     21st January 1963Having slept badly, Harry mopes over his breakfast as he thinks about Johnny's predicament. Frank interrupts a chat in the Corner Shop between Elsie, Christine and Florrie about "Ronnie". Ken is offended when Concepta says it's right that he's going back to teaching as he has responsibilities towards Val now. Not knowing of Len's confession, Concepta thinks Johnny only has himself to blame if he didn't know which of his passengers had paid their fares. Johnny tells his wife how bitter he is towards Harry. Concepta hears from Harry where Johnny lives. The Gamma Garments sale hasn't been a success and Swindley takes his frustrations out on Emily and Doreen. Jed and Sheila prepare for a day on the market selling genuine Fair Isle sweaters...made in Japan.

    23rd January 1963Lucille asks Florrie if Sheila is going out with Jed, worrying her further. Jed asks Sheila to model his sweaters on the market. Emily is concerned as Swindley is still not back from Gamma Garments' head office. He returns weary after a difficult hour with Mr Papagopolous. Harry tires of the buses and looks around for another job in the paper but Concepta tells him to be mindful of his responsibilities and not give up a good job when all the local mills are closing. Swindley is short with Doreen and Emily confides in Albert that she thinks the younger girl will have to be made redundant because of the lack of profits.

    28th January 1963Jed is down about the failure of the market stall and Minnie tries to cheer him up. Sheila calls round for her wages and is not put off by his offers of monthly salary or payment in merchandise. He has no option but to hand over cash. Emily tells Doreen that she's the one who's been sacked and she feels bitter about it. Doreen snubs Swindley when he comes in and Emily snaps at him when she's serving Harry. Concepta thinks Harry has changed his mind about giving in his notice and Annie claims the credit for the talking-to that Jack gave him and Len.

    30th January 1963Jed hasn't slept, worried that he was almost engaged to Sheila. She's managed to put her parents right and makes fun of the fright he experienced. Emily turns up for her last day at Gamma Garments, still angry at her treatment. Doreen gives Swindley cheek when she turns up late. Martha and Ena both think Emily was sacked because Swindley was jealous of Edwin. They are amazed when Jed happily agrees to unload the stock from a van he's borrowed as Minnie is concerned that Bobby has settled down in one of the boxes. Emily breaks down when serving the Hewitts.

    4th February 1963Elsie sends a postal order to Dennis for his birthday as he's written to say he needs the money. Frank calls to say he has tickets for Christine and him to go out tonight. Harry takes Lucille to task for doing her homework at breakfast and not the night before but she insists it's a school newspaper article. He looks through her homework and finds fault with her scores. Jack decides not to go to his regimental reunion as he thinks he ought to meet the new area manager and Annie takes offence that he seems not to trust her to handle matters. Jed is happy as he cleared his stock of blouses at the market on Saturday.

    6th February 1963Swindley makes an appointment to see Mr Papagopolous, admitting to Frank that he's finding it hard to manage without Emily. Frank avoids answering directly when Ken asks him if he enjoyed himself last night. Doreen brings Emily's personal belongings round and tries to push her into trying a different job. Emily misses Gamma badly though. Elsie brings Ena up to date with Christine's news. Ena is concerned what the neighbours will say when they find out they've been deceiving them about Christine's love life.

    11th February 1963Jed shops for Minnie, thinking he's haggled money off two tins of cherries until he realises they were on special offer all the time. Emily is delighted to be back working in Gamma. Doreen tells her of the sacrifice Swindley was willing make on her behalf. She's deeply touched until he tells her he would have been willing to do the same for anyone. Val overhears Christine talking about an expensive trip she made to the theatre a few days back and knows she couldn't afford it herself.

    13th February 1963Val worries about Frank, wondering if Esther did the right thing and thinking they should leave him and Christine alone but Ken isn't sympathetic to his father's situation. Albert looks forward to his regimental reunion but Frank is in no mood to discuss it with him and tells him to mind his own business when he tries to ask him what's wrong. Annie buys several items at Gamma Garments to help the business.

They are about to kiss near the viaduct steps when they are interrupted by a drunk Albert and Jack singing It's a Long Way to Tipperary as they return from their regimental reunion. After they have gone, they manage a kiss but Jed is the next person to encounter the pair as he searches for Bobby.

    20th February 1963Joe is astounded by the threat and is at a loss to understand why Alf wants to fight him. When Alf informs him that Frank is Christine's boyfriend, Joe laughs and Alf goes for him. Len and Jerry arrive and break up the altercation. Len tells them they need their bumps feeling for fighting over a girl. Ena invites Albert round to No.5 to watch the second-hand television that Jed's installed there.

    25th February 1963Annie almost catches Jed adding to graffiti about Jack on the viaduct. He tries to get Doreen to agree to a date with him but she easily escapes his charms. Joe starts work on Gamma Garments' water heater as Swindley has given him the job. Len mouths off in the corner shop about Swindley. Emily walks in and fearlessly lectures him about evading his responsibilities. Martha and Minnie spread the news that the rents are going up on both Coronation Street and Mawdsley Street.

Furious, she's determined not to pay up. Albert and Harry are similarly angry about the rise. Lucille asks him about the street thirty years ago.

Although embarrassed, Annie remembers her "triumph" as Lady Godiva with some fondness. Doreen fancies going to a casino but Jed finds an advert for a club where the girls can get in free. Annie assures Jack that she did wear a body stocking and wig. She continues to ponder Ena's motives in keeping the paper.

    11th March 1963Harry cleans his car, thinking of selling it, though he turns down a scrap offer from Jed. Jack grows tired of the jokes about Lady Godiva. Emily tells Val that although business has improved, they are awaiting a verdict from Gamma Garments' head office soon as to the staffing situation. Val snubs Christine, annoying Elsie. Albert calls on Ena, wanting to organise a bingo contest for the Over 60's Club social in the Mission, using some of the play's profits for prizes.

The residents think Frank must have something else on his mind to recover from Christine so easily. In Swindley's absence, Emily and Doreen run Gamma Garments very smoothly. Mavis Fox arrives from London looking for a "Coronation Street" with detached houses in. Dennis catches up with her and explains that his Grannie lives in the street whilst he's looking after his father's mill. She is thrilled and he installs her in a hotel. Emily and Doreen fall for the van drivers, Alf and Fred who transfer some of their stock to another branch. They then discover there was no transfer and the stock has been stolen.

Martha loses Ena's pension book. Frank refuses to listen to Ken's opposition to the shop. Ken thinks he shouldn't give up the security of the GPO. Mavis returns to London. Elsie is horrified to learn Dennis let Mavis go when she discovers her mother owns a few hotels.

Ken returns Ena's pension book after a schoolboy finds it. She discovers that this week's pension has been drawn.

Dennis books a table at a posh restaurant to treat Elsie, but also on Wednesday.

Elsie and Len grow very intimate at the dance.

Elsie refuses to go out with Len again because he is still legally married. Concepta tackles Harry about his earnings. Elsie begins to think that the power has gone to Christine's head.

Elsie tries to give Christine some advice but she tells Elsie that their friendship stops outside the shop. Swindley tells the girls Cresswell is only a buyer. Annie gets a letter from Arthur Forsythe-Jones saying he'll be coming up whilst Jack is away fishing.

Emily, Doreen and Ena toast Swindley and his future. Arthur impresses the customers and answers the phone when Jack telephones. Ken warns Concepta that Lucille could cause trouble. Lucille begs Harry to let her stay, saying she wants her mum.

Frank has hassle with Ethel Tyson, his tenant above the shop, who is two months in arrears. Concepta threatens to go to Ireland on her own. Elsie tells Len to tread easy with Dennis as they were only together for one afternoon.

Lucille hears and starts to pack, begging Concepta to let her leave. Concepta stops rowing and tries to comfort her. She brings the two of them together and Concepta resigns herself to her fate at No.7.

Albert accidentally grows parsley instead of onions at his allotment and gives them out to everyone to get rid of them. Christine makes it clear to Elsie that she doesn't like her taking personal calls at work. She overhears Elsie complaining about her on the phone to Len. As he admires his new shop front, Frank is confident that the opening will draw a crowd. The residents are worried for him as the shop is in a bad location. Florrie sorts out the refreshments for the opening. Len gets a letter from Stanley and is upset that Stanley doesn't seem bothered about seeing him. Elsie takes the day off work to go to the opening, without clearing it with Christine.

David can't understand why Ken is still staying in the Street and believes he can do better than Bessie Street School. Frank tells David he now understands why he stayed away when Ida died. Valerie suggests that Ken apply to teach at a grammar school as he'll earn more money. Ken dismisses the idea as he's happy where he is. David buys everyone drinks at the Rovers. Harry refuses it as he's bitter about not being in work.

He's not interested but takes the cutting anyway. Elsie decides to resign before she's sacked. Val has to back out of seeing Marian when Ena reminds her that she made a hair appointment which she didn't note down. Miss Read tells Elsie she can stay in the department as she has more experience than Christine. Annie goes down with the summer chill. Florrie tells Len that Elliston's Raincoat Factory has to close for two weeks as they have no orders, and Sheila has gone to Bridlington with her parents. Harry borrows £20 from Len. Christine is put in charge of children's wear. She makes up with Elsie before she leaves. Marian's husband has food poisoning and, to Val's horror, Ken decides to see Marian on his own. Harry refuses to let Concepta go back to work at the Rovers. She tells him she has saved £46 in her post office book. Ken goes out with Marian.

Annie is in bed because of her summer chill and refuses to see a doctor. Albert hears about Ken and Marian from Ena and orders Val to make more effort to go out with Ken. Dennis gives Doreen some records he got through the profession but they turn out to be golden oldies. Jerry gives Dennis the idea of holding his own auditions for new talent. He advertises for acts to contact him with his new venture - Dennis Tanner Enterprises. Len asks Elsie out to a charity bash at the British Legion. Concepta volunteers to help Jack at the Rovers. Emily is thrilled when Mr. Papagopolous congratulates the Rosamund Street branch for putting sales up 17% in the Gamma Weekly News. Valerie hears Ena gossiping about Elsie and Len and thinks she's talking about Ken going out with Marian again. She tells Ena to keep her mouth shut. Concepta tries to reassure Val that Ken wouldn't be interested in Marian. Marian writes to Ken asking him and Val over to hers for dinner. Val refuses to go. Ken yells at her to grow up. Elsie is horrified to see Dennis's advert in the Gazette and more so when a piano accordion player turns up No. 11 for an audition.

    10 Jul 1963Gamma Garments' takings are up again. Doreen thinks Emily should be made manageress. Elsie sent the accordionist away. Emily is summoned to Gamma Garments' head office. Albert warns Valerie she'll lose Ken if she tries to shut the world out. Ken tells Val he turned down the Lunds invitation. He tries to reach an understanding with Val; he says he met Marian to fulfil an obligation and doesn't care what people think. He snaps again when Val asks him why he's late back from school. Val doesn't know how to respond and admits she's always wondered why Ken married her. He reminds her of the time he found her at Ida's grave and told her he loved her. They are reconciled. Dennis receives three bundles of letters in the post and gets Doreen and Jerry to help rifle through them. Doreen is annoyed when Dennis leaves them to slave away while he reads the paper but he mollifies her by asking her to audition the acts with him. Harry tells Len he turned down a job offer from Dave Smith as a bookie's clerk. One of Dennis's prospective acts is a singing window cleaner. Emily is told that Mr. Crossley from the Gaunt Street branch is to be the new manager of her branch. Doreen has heard bad things about him.

Dennis spends his time rehearsing Walter. Emily finds the petty cash is down. Lucille surprises the Hewitts by not minding about not going to Belgium. Neil is tracked down by Pat Lynch who refuses to leave Gamma Garments until she's seen him.

He dumps himself on Dennis. Neil explains to Emily that he borrowed the petty cash. Jerry tells Len he's thinking of marrying Sheila. Neil borrows money off Sheila as they continue to meet in secret.

With Ken at work, Neil tries to seduce Val but Concepta saves her. Elsie tells Sheila to drop Neil for Jerry's sake. Sheila accuses her of being jealous, old and past it.

Elsie catches Walter sneaking about in his pyjamas. She tells him he can stay for £1.10s a week. Jerry hears that Harry saw Sheila with Neil three weeks ago. Harry gets an interview as chauffeur at Amalgamated Steel. Jerry catches Sheila and Neil together in the Street.

    12 Aug 1963Neil tells Jerry that Sheila's for sharing and they start fighting. The residents try to stop them but when Neil insults Sheila, Jerry knocks him unconscious. Neil comes to in fifteen minutes and swears vengeance. Sheila rejects Jerry. Len tells Elsie he is divorced from Nellie and it will be absolute in three months. He asks her to marry him on 5th November.

Frank sides with Neil against the residents and cashes cheques for him. Elsie persuades Florrie to tear up a letter she has written to Mrs. Birtles; she feels the affair will soon end. Harry discovers he'll be driving the darts team outing to New Brighton. Sheila breaks down when Neil stands her up and she waits for him for three hours.

When she tells him he's not man enough to finish with her, he slaps her in front of a shop full of customers. Emily phones Mr Papagopolous demanding Neil's removal.

Neil refuses to believe he's been sacked until Gamma Garments' head office tells him. He leaves, still owing the petty cash. Ena tells Elsie how lonely it can be, being old and manless. Dennis advises Elsie to marry Len.

Concepta is not happy when she learns that Harry will have to work some nights. The coach keeps breaking down and the men get drunk. When a policeman tries to get the men to quieten down at 2.00am, Albert knocks his helmet off and Alf tries to hit him. He calls for a prison van.

Dr. Aston arrives and Sheila is rescued. Dennis cuts his arm and is covered in blood. Len offers Elsie a no-strings relationship but she refuses. Sheila is taken to hospital in an ambulance. Frank puts shop flat tenant Ethel Tyson's rent up - she refuses to pay it.

After the wedding, Dennis reads telegrams from Doreen, the Walkers and Sheila. The Booths go off on honeymoon in Torquay. Ena returns to the Vestry to find it wrecked, the harmonium shattered and the furniture slashed.

As the residents gather in the Mission Hall, Dennis announces it is Annie's life. Annie is surprised when the show includes a recorded message from Arthur Forsythe-Jones and visits from Joan, Billy, Ena, Minnie, Martha, Esther, opera producer Edgar Nuttall and George Stubbins, the man who led the horse on which she portrayed Lady Godiva. Esther announces that she's moving to Glasgow.

Frank avoids answering directly when Ken asks him if he enjoyed himself last night. Doreen brings Emily's personal belongings round and tries to push her into trying a different job. Emily misses Gamma badly though. Elsie brings Ena up to date with Christine's news. Ena is concerned what the neighbours will say when they find out they've been deceiving them about Christine's love life.
