Excellent. Embrace the overacting of the era

I haven't seen it yet, but the reasons people are hating on the new 2026 Wuthering Heights seem pretty wack when compared to this movie. It's for some reason considered a classic: absolute generic waste of time imo. You take away the book, you have nothing, & funnily enough, they did decide to take away the book, & the movie is a shell of what it should be. I have no real affection for this film. I expected it to be pretty good. Instead, it gave zero craps about what made the book good, & then throws half of the book out anyway. Seriously. Maybe I need to watch it again with the nostalgia rose-tinted glasses some others seem to have - & I'm more than happy trying them on with some other films - but having just finished a re-reading of the book, watching this, it seems downright disrespectful. The leads are both very sexy though tbh. Apparently a bad thing in the new version.

“if he loved you with all the power of his soul for a whole lifetime, he couldn't love you as much as i do in a single day. not he, not the world, not even you, cathy, can come between us.“ a lot of the adaptational problems i have with fennell’s version exist here too: both cathy and heathcliff (but especially heathcliff) are defanged, softened to be more palatable romantic protagonists; heathcliff is not a person of color; the lintons are not blonde; and chief among them is the omission of the second half of the novel. without all of these things, but especially the second half of the narrative, this is not wuthering heights; it’s simply another georgian/victorian era melodrama, which is to say a drop in the bucket. i do appreciate its more faithful approach to the gothic themes of the novel, and the acting is genuinely superb. if it wasn’t for the chemistry between olivier and oberon i don’t think i would’ve enjoyed this as much as i did. p.s. madame ehlers was tickling the shit out of those ivories; she had that whole ballroom wrapped around her fingers while she played mozart’s “turkish march”, like she was honestly putting belt to ass on that sonata.

This clarified a lot and I really liked it. I haven’t watch a lot of older black and white movies, so this was a good introduction. I remember reading this book in high school and being very confused, and about a year ago I bought the audiobook and followed along with a family tree. I knew I liked the idea of a haunting romance, but the movie helped me piece it together without the personal connection of the storyteller mussing it up. Having faces to names solidified times and places. Makes me want to read it one more time!

The imagery of the opening sets the stage for the tragedy that Wyler wants to convey in the story.
