Thats the Wolverine we had all been waiting for up to this point. Some great call backs to the comics; Wolverine with young side-kicks, Ninjas, Japan. Some fantastic action scenes; the Bullet train. Most Wolverine fans appreciated this movie, and you owe it to yourself to enjoy it.

Review: "The Wolverine," directed by James Mangold, begins with a different approach to Logan, showing a character much more tired and marked by what happened in "X-Men: The Last Stand." Living in isolation and carrying the guilt of having killed Jean Grey, he is far from the image of the hero always ready for a new battle. This more vulnerable version of Logan works well because the film gives space to his traumas and the psychological wear and tear he carries. Hugh Jackman manages to convey this more closed-off side of the character without needing to exaggerate, making it clear that there is much more happening to Logan than just his combat skills. The idea of temporarily removing Logan's healing factor is also one of the best decisions in the film. For the first time, his fights take on a greater sense of danger, since he can no longer simply recover from any injury as he previously could. This changes how some action scenes are perceived and makes Logan seem more vulnerable. The situation also fits the moment the character is going through, as the loss of his ability to heal functions almost as a physical extension of his own exhaustion. Another interesting thing is that the film spends a good part of its time functioning more as a dramatic thriller set in Japan than as a traditional superhero adventure. The presence of the Yakuza, the disputes involving the Yashida family, and Logan's relationship with Yukio give the story a different atmosphere from other X-Men films. James Mangold takes advantage of this setting to create quieter moments and allow Logan to interact with characters who are not necessarily connected to the mutant universe. This change of environment helps the film have its own identity and makes the story not seem like just another mission for the character. Mangold's direction also contributes significantly to this atmosphere. The cinematography, especially in the night scenes, creates a darker aesthetic that matches Logan's emotional state. Japan is visually well-utilized, both in urban areas and in more isolated moments, and some sequences manage to convey a sense of tension without relying solely on large explosions. The problem is that this more restrained identity begins to be lost as the story progresses. The third act increases the scale too much and takes the plot down a much more exaggerated path, especially in the battle against the Silver Samurai. It is precisely in this part that "The Wolverine" loses some of what it had built up. The idea of a huge adamantium suit acting as the final adversary seems to belong to another film when compared to the more personal and dramatic tone that dominated the story until then. The fight still has some interesting moments, but the excessive spectacle detracts from the impact of the issues surrounding Logan. Ultimately, the film works best when it focuses on the character, his traumas, and this new phase in Japan, but it diminishes its own strength by trying to end in a much grander way than the story actually needed.
- MBUlovesCinema22. august 20265/10 Honestly, this might be my least favorite X-Men movie so far. 💀 I liked the idea of focusing on Wolverine after Jean’s death and seeing him deal with all the grief and nightmares, and I liked his relationship with Yukio and Mariko because they felt like actual people he cared about. But the actual story just didn’t do much for me. The whole Yashida/Silver Samurai situation felt pretty messy, and I never really got that invested in what was happening. There were some cool action scenes and Wolverine moments, but overall this movie just wasn’t it for me. It feels like it was trying to fix Logan after The Last Stand, but the movie itself didn’t really work for me.

- Varun19. oktober 2024It’s so rare these days to get a whole solo movie on a superhero just having a side quest kind of story. I had a lot of nostalgia for this movie, Wolverine in JAPAN fighting yakuza and ninjas??? Sign me up!!! Glad I did a rewatch. It’s definitely a mediocre film that does a lot of basic uninteresting things but I still enjoyed it, it has some cool action sequences and pretty good pacing. I think the plot twist is also well done. I hope we’ll get to see more superhero movies in the future that incorporates Japan into their story.

After X-Men Origins: Wolverine, hopes weren't exactly high for another outing with Wolverine, but thank god we got one. This film has everything, Wolverine, Bullet Trains, The Yakuza, Ninjas, Samurai and atomic blasts. Seriously good stuff. The Wolverine doesn't fall victim to trying to be cool and as a result has the breathing room to really do it's own thing. We pick up with Logan after the events of X3, where he is a destroyed man living in cave. He gets whisked off to Japan and gets dragged into a family conspiracy involving losing his powers, a weird snake lady and a massive a massive robot samurai. The action scenes are spot on, with a weakened wolverine cutting his way through Japanese criminals and Ninjas. While not particularly bloody, they are plenty violent. The audio and visuals are generally really good. As much as I'd like a 4K blu-ray of this, I don't know if it would really give much benefit. The extended cut is a nice touch with a few more fight scenes.

While the general acting across the board is above average, Hugh Jackman is phenomenal and carries the emotional weight as always. The story itself is somewhat average, though it does offer some unexpected twists. The action choreography and sequences are excellent, especially the breathtaking fight on top of the bullet train. However, the climax ultimately feels like a letdown, failing to live up to the high stakes built throughout the film. Thankfully, the incredibly surprising post-credits scene completely makes up for it and sets up an exciting future.
