Things that came effortlessly to Chinatown feels formulated and fabricated with an almost try too hard factor with this sequel that came too late. It’s hard to separate this era Jack Nicholson from Joker and other iconic jack roles of the 80s and 90s. This era Jack is just a different beast than 70s Jack. The narration felt out of place and too on the nose for a sequel to Chinatown even though it’s par for the course for a neo noir. This movie has a visually more appropriate obvious style for this kind of movie but once again it felt too try hard and too typical and on the nose. Again the difference between so much effort it’s very obvious, to effortlessness. Two Jakes ain’t bad by any means but it’s not on the same level as Chinatown. Things I praise CT for such as a story that is complex enough to hold interest but simple enough to not lose you, doesn't apply to T2Js. It will lose you to the point of disinterest with unnecessary complex levels.

This movie is a good sequel to the awesome Chinatown but of course, not as good. Jack Nicholson again is a private investigator in the early days of LA, 1948. I like this type of slow, steady, old fashioned, attention to detail mystery. The storyline is heavy and you have to pay careful attention to keep track of what's going on and that's how its supposed to be. I always love Harvey Keitel and hes especially good in this movie as the other Jake. I find the setting and the period cars and clothes, even the furniture and office buildings back then fascinating. It's well acted and directed, its interesting how Jake gets pulled into these complicated issues when it seems like a simple case on the surface. I would recommend seeing this but I dont think it's that necessary to see Chinatown first, they stand alone. I think you have to like this type of movie to follow it. Jack Nicholson directed it and he did a great job starring in it also. Good supporting cast, too.
