In one of the scenes in "The siege" you catch a brief glimpse of the twin towers in the background and this film in some ways predicts 9/11 in that it is based on a series of terrorist outrages on American soil that starts with a suicide bombing of a busload of passengers, it continues with the bombing of a theatre and culminates in a truck full of explosives crashing into the FBI building in New York killing 600 people. This leads to martial law being declared, the army moving in when the politicians believe that the FBI are failing to catch those involved and the Muslim community being targeted in much the same way as Japanese Americans were targeted and put into detention camps in the USA after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941. It is exciting, thought provoking and very well made and Denzel Washington as an FBI agent, Annette Benning as a CIA agent and Bruce Willis as an army commander turn in great performances to make the film a memorable experience. Given how frightened and angry people felt after 9/11 it is not difficult to believe that something of this kind could easily happen if a series of bombings took place, it was difficult to find the bombers and the public clamour for something drastic to be done. The atmosphere of fear engendered by the continual bombings, the frustration of the law enforcement authorities as they try to apprehend the bombers is well conveyed in "The siege" and it can only be hoped that something of the kind does not happen in the US or here.

The 90s produced some of the best movies ever made.. and this is in that collection. Denzel’s performance and Bruce Willis clash in this pre 911 movie.

A pretty tense and gripping thriller that throws NYC into total chaos. Denzel and Bruce Willis are solid as always, and the action keeps things moving. Some moments are a little over-the-top, but the movie still makes you think about how far people will go when fear takes over. It’s messy, dramatic, and definitely 90s, but in a good way. Overall, a fun, thought-provoking ride that’s worth checking out.

The Siege is a tense political thriller that still hits hard, even decades later. Directed by Edward Zwick and starring Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, and Annette Bening, the film explores what happens when terrorism hits New York City; and how fear can push a nation to the edge of its own values. Denzel Washington delivers a strong, grounded performance as an FBI agent trying to stop a wave of terrorist attacks while navigating political pressure, military overreach, and public panic. Bruce Willis plays a chilling Army general who represents what happens when national security starts overriding civil liberties. Their clash is the heartbeat of the movie; and it’s intense. What makes The Siege powerful is how uncomfortable it’s willing to be. It doesn’t just show explosions and action; it forces you to wrestle with profiling, government overreach, martial law, and the moral cost of “doing whatever it takes.” Especially in a post-9/11 world, this film feels almost prophetic. Is it perfect? No. Some elements haven’t aged gracefully, and parts of the portrayal sparked controversy. But as a thriller with substance, it absolutely earns its place. Final Verdict: The Siege is gripping, unsettling, and still relevant. It’s not just a movie; it’s a warning wrapped in solid performances and sharp tension. Worth watching if you like thrillers that actually make you think. ⭐ Rating: 8.5/10
