I caught this one with the same mindset I’d have watching Leviathan or DeepStar Six, expecting rubbery monsters, grizzled dialogue and a setting that screams “no escape.” The plot? A tropical storm traps the crew of an oil rig just as they disturb something nasty in the deep. Cue the creature! It’s got that early 2000s digital sheen, the kind of lighting that makes everything look slightly too clean for horror. But the heart’s in the right place: practical effects, tight corridors and a script that knows when to lean into genre tropes. There’s no subtlety here, just survival, splatter and stormy suspense. A creature feature that hits all the expected beats and that’s exactly why it works. If you’ve got a soft spot for isolated horror, monster suits and the kind of film that feels like it aired on RTL7 at 23:00 with Dutch subtitles and a beer in hand, The Rig delivers.
