En ekspedition til Mars går galt, da astronauten Mark Watney bliver fanget i en voldsom storm. Hans kolleger tror, at han er død, og de rejser tilbage til Jorden uden ham, men Mark har overlevet og er nu strandet alene på den ugæstfri røde planet. Han må klare sig med et minimalt forråd og bruge al sin energi og forstand på at finde en måde at overleve på. Samtidig skal han finde en metode, som han kan bruge til at sende nødsignaler til Jorden. Men selvom det lykkes ham at få sendt signalerne, vil det tage flere år for NASA at få sendt en redningsmission til Mars. Hvad skal han stille op?

Matt Damon does a nice job as "Captain Blond Beard" and I am sure he woukd agree a better pirate then spaceman. The story keeps you engaged and rooting for a mission that will never happen in our lifetime, if it does I'll comeback to this review and apologize to everyone who read it.
