A rogue missile slips into Earth’s atmosphere, superheating everything beneath it to ten million degrees as it circles the globe. A small group of scientists races to stop it. The characters are mouthpieces for information, and the personal subplots (romance, sacrifice, etc.) feel tacked on rather than earned. The movie works more as a snapshot of its era’s fear than as a fully realized story, but that anxious mood is precisely what it was aiming for.
