This often quiet look into the relationship between Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and their God is a tale of rage, but also acceptance as the bloodthirsty mob waits for their sacrifice. Their transformation is in three stages: As Gods, As Men, As the Dead. That aptly sums up their public degradation, but is contrasted with finding, perhaps for the first time in their lives, a small morsel of inner grace within humility as they reconcile their fate. As far as I can tell it's historically accurate, or at least historically plausible. It's a beautiful film where almost every frame could be a painting. Strong performances from the entire cast. This is definitely an art house style film, so go in expecting contemplation rather than explicit drama. So much of the richness here is in what is unsaid.
