- rockinamadeus21. marts 2026It was fun in all the right ways. The villain was obvious as soon as they showed up.
- jackmeat13. januar 2026My quick rating - 6.4/10. I popped on The Blackening, knowing it would be something I had seen before, and it infuses that with elements of both missed opportunities and commendable humor. This horror-comedy film follows a group of black friends who gather for a Juneteenth weekend getaway, only to discover themselves trapped in a secluded cabin with a deranged killer. Did that word "cabin" grab your attention? There are shortcomings, but it does manage to toss in some quality laughs along the way. Another positive is its timely exploration of Juneteenth, a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of African Americans from slavery in the United States. Setting the story during this period offers a unique backdrop that adds cultural significance and gives the characters some historical context to work off of. The cast of The Blackening shines, bringing a vibrant and relatable dynamic to their characters. Jermaine Fowler stood out to me since his laughs were dead on. The chemistry between the group of friends is palpable, even though I didn't recognize some of them, and their interactions generate genuine humor. The comedic moments help to alleviate tension and inject lightheartedness into what is a pretty dark and suspenseful story. I just felt that they missed a lot of possible jokes that were obviously the target. The poster alone tells you exactly where they were going, and I just felt it suffered from missed chances. The film sets up our typical story with the friends being trapped in a remote cabin, but fails to capitalize on the horror and doesn't even really stick with the overused concept. The pacing feels uneven at times, with certain scenes dragging on while others rush through crucial plot points. Still, director Tim Story managed to develop the mystery of who the killer is, which has to be a staple for these flicks, and does so quite well. The Blackening manages to entertain with its clever humor and occasional scary moments. It does successfully combine horror and comedy genres, just a bit light on the horror. That may have been my own expectations' fault. Still, the Juneteenth backdrop adds relevance, reflecting on the African American experience while incorporating elements of celebration and liberation, while answering the question it presents on the poster LOL.
- BarsNoHooks31. december 2025Solid flick.
- nimajnebmai1. november 2025Stellar black comedy. Soon as they telecommuted in the car I knew it was gonna be funny as hell.
- Drinelson5. juli 2025It was a bit funny but fell short in every other way. Wasn’t scary. Very predictable. Wasn’t even scary in the way comedy based slashers usually are. The writing was a bit sloppy. The big reveal wasn’t super shocking. It’s a mindless watch so if you want something mildly funny that you don’t have to think much about, go for it. Otherwise, I’d watch something else.
- Kevin Ward2. juli 2025I’ve been really looking forward to this slasher comedy ever since I heard it’s announcement, and I can definitely say I had a awesome time at the theater even if some of the elements hold it back from horror comedy greatness. A group of friends gather for a reunion at a cabin in the woods, but find themselves caught in a deadly trap by a crazed killer. Largely centered around the horror trope wherein the black character always dies first, what happens if all of the characters are black? The predicament has the group humorously examining black culture with their own experiences in an effort to determine who is the “blackest.” The Blackening first and foremost is really funny and experiencing it in a large crowd is absolutely the way to see this. The largely unknown cast was really excellent (and ridiculously attractive). I hope to see some of them in some new projects soon. Holding it back slightly, though, is that as a horror/slasher, it doesn’t quite live up. A low kill count, light gore, and minimal scares left me a bit wanting. And despite a really cool setup with a haunting and creepy game at its center, the fairly obvious killer with pretty lame motivations underwhelmed when it was all said and done. I don’t want to dwell too much on the shortcomings though, when most of those are mostly just my slasher expectations, where The Blackening is truly leaning way more into the comedy. And in that regard it excels. I would recommend people go see it opening weekend. Even though the humor is centered largely around black culture and stereotypes, I think the humor plays to all audiences (dark Aunt Viv name drop--for example). My score was falling somewhere between 3-3.5, but I’ll round up because I really enjoyed this cast.
