Based on the assumption that Sputnik is gathering intelligence for the Soviets, a spy is sent to Moscow to determine just how far along their missile program is. Surprise, surprise: Sputnik gave them all the data they need to build one nuclear missile, which is ready to launch against the U.S. This Cold-War propaganda film, released soon after the launch of Sputnik, intended to rally public support for an anti-ballistic missile program.

Rocket Attack: USA has been described as a propaganda and science fiction film. I completely disagree. Rocket Attack: USA is a 1958 mini-movie, about an hour long. This movie is like a Robert Ludlum novel --- long before he ever started writing novels based on espionage and intrigue. . Rocket Attack has the main character, a sabateur, secretly sent to Russia. He is to sabotage a nuclear-armed rocket the Russians will use to destroy NewYork City. He meets his contact: a Russian woman who wants to help the United States. He also meets a British contact. The sabatuer must make his way to Leningrad to stop the rocket. This so much like Robert Ludlum. . I believe that Rocket Attack influenced two authors who wrote a book called "Failsafe", published in 1962. This book was made into a movie in 1964 with Henry Fonda. "Failsafe" is about the United States destroying Moscow with a nuclear bomb. To prevent all out war, the President of the United States orders that New York City be desroyed with a nuclear bomb. . At the end of the 1958 mini-movie, Rocket Attack, there are scenes of women in New York City trying to save babies before millions of people are killed by the nuclear-armed rocket. . At the of the 1964 movie, "Failsafe", there are similar flashes of scenes depicting babies and children about to be annihilated by a nuclear bomb. . I believe that the 1958 mini-movie, Rocket Attack, is the foundafion for the 1962 book, "Failsafe" and the 1964 movie. . In Rocket Attack, there is an unseen narrator for certain segments (like there would be a narrator in a novel); but there is also a real story and plot about how characters face their relationships and the end of life. Rocket Attack should be given greater credit for what it did in all its low budget black-and-white glory. Review by Charles Ynfante.
