Watch for the special effects alone. Lance Henriksen is a bonus

Pumpkinhead is such a cool looking creature, they did an amazing job bringing him to life. My main issue is that the film took way too long to get going. I was pretty invested for the first 30+ minutes but then I started to wonder if Pumpkinhead was actually in the movie 😋

A decent bit of 80s horror. On the plus side are Henrickson and mist of the other "locals". Plus the excellent practice effects. On the minus side is the entire group of "non-locals" or "fodder". The guys were tolerable, but the women were interchangeable and intensely forgettable. The story isn't bad, even if the plot was straight forward. Direction was competent even though I f some of the locals leaned toward offensively stereotypical. But just minor debits there. Overall, though, it is an enjoyable and rewatchable bit o' spooky.

Probably like it more out of nostalgia than anything else, but Pumpkinhead still scratches that ‘80s horror itch. The monster effects are fantastic, Stan Winston’s creature design is goated and the backwoods atmosphere gives it that campfire-tale vibe. The story’s a little thin and the pacing drags in spots, but Lance Henriksen’s grief-stricken performance holds it together. It’s grim, weirdly sad, and totally of its era. Great pick and a fun revisit.

The creature is easily the reason to watch this one. Pumpkinhead looks awesome, and the practical effects still hold up really well today. The darker atmosphere and creepy backwoods setting also do a lot to make the movie feel different from your average 80s horror. You can tell a lot of care went into the monster itself. The story is pretty simple and moves a bit slower than I expected. Some scenes drag, and it never gets quite as intense as it feels like it should. Still, the creature design, atmosphere, and overall look of the movie make it worth checking out. Not one of my favorite 80s horror movies, but definitely one with a memorable monster.
