We're all alone and looking for connection, but to find it is oblivion. This has aged well to an almost prescient level. Or maybe existential loneliness and isolation are so foundational to the human experience that this type of story will always resonate in that shared, empty, existence.
- Patrick Wai2. august 2026Watching Pulse in 2026, parts of it inevitably feel dated. The dial-up internet, bulky CRT monitors, and computer technology firmly place it in another era. Surprisingly, none of that hurts the movie. If anything, it becomes a time capsule that somehow remains unsettling. Japanese horror has always excelled at proving that you don't need elaborate monsters, jump scares, or gallons of blood to create genuine fear. Pulse is a perfect example. Shadows, silence, empty rooms, minimal performances, and a carefully designed soundscape do almost all the heavy lifting. Even something as ordinary as the screech of a dial-up modem becomes unsettling. Blurred figures drifting across a computer screen somehow feel more disturbing than many modern CGI ghosts. The film understands that horror often comes from suggestion rather than revelation. One of the movie's greatest strengths is its atmosphere. There's something deeply unsettling about seeing places that should be full of life completely abandoned. Empty offices, deserted streets, silent apartments... they create a feeling that's difficult to describe. It's less about fear of being attacked and more about the quiet realization that something is terribly wrong. For much of the film, you don't really know what's happening. Instead of racing toward answers, the story lets a growing sense of dread slowly settle over everything. It trusts the audience to live with uncertainty. Ironically, I think Pulse improves on a second viewing. Once you're no longer trying to solve the mystery, you begin to appreciate the craftsmanship behind its mood, pacing, and visual language. You notice how patiently it builds tension and how confidently it refuses to explain everything. It's not a movie for everyone. Viewers looking for a fast-paced horror film or constant scares may find it frustratingly slow. But if you appreciate atmosphere over action, and dread over jump scares, Pulse remains one of the finest examples of minimalist horror ever made.
