And it's all the more impressive for the fact that there's two stark moments where all of it dissipates and feels super relaxed and chill: each time Bear and Sarah have a one on one. The dynamic the two of them have sitting on the floor of the music store, and then later in the car, you can just feel how comfortable and at ease they are with each other (and we can sense it in the latter scene even though we're dreading what is surely to come. And it does, and even having expected it, it's more horrible than we'd feared) which makes the anxiousness feel even more oppressive having gotten outside of it for fleeting moments. That said, despite the fact the movie does a tonally perfect job of instilling the protagonist's emotions into the viewer, it also makes it clear that he is not a sympathetic or good character at all. There are multiple moments where, even though it's far too late to manage anything that could be considered "the right thing," he's too scared and self-conserving to make anything less terrible for Nikki or Ian or Sarah or even himself, ironically. The movie's use of near dark and near silhouette is unmatched. I've never seen anything like it. Nikki being nearly completely obscured but with just enough detail to have your mind's eye fill in a sort of distorted, creepy, monstrous version of her was perfect. And those eyes shining out of the shadows. Amazing. I don't know if Inde Navarrette just has Jim Carrey level talent, or if CG was used to help exaggerate her expressions, but either way they were legendary, the absolute perfect mix of unsettling and silly. All of her expressions, mannerisms, movements, and line delivery always perfectly toed the line between bizarre and horrifying. And the movie doesn't make the mistake of feeling the need to do a huge lore dump in the third act, which is amazing. We absolutely get enough to draw some conclusions, without spoiling any of the mystery or distracting from the horror. Just a phenomenal horror film, top to bottom.
- Hipster ZOMBIE24. maj 2026Blumhouse’s Obsession isn’t just one of the best horror films of 2026, it’s one of the year’s best films outright. Director Curry Barker turns a deceptively simple premise into a spiraling nightmare drenched in dread, heartbreak, and absolute psychological chaos. But the real revelation is Inde Navarrette, who delivers a fearless, career-defining performance that deserves serious awards attention. She’s terrifying, tragic, magnetic, and impossible to look away from. By the final act, the film feels less like a movie and more like a panic attack trapped inside a cursed love story. Blumhouse struck horror gold with this one.
- Kevin Ward24. maj 2026F🤩kin loved this. Inde Navarrette absolutely stuns in a performance that’s charming, chilling, creepy, and darkly funny all at once. The film takes a deceptively simple premise (careful‑what‑you‑wish‑for, monkey’s‑paw setup) and uses it to dig into the messiness of asymmetrical desire in relationships. Primarily, it’s just so much fun. There are these excellently brutal bursts of blood and gore. But most important is Navarrette’s physicality, the way her body moves, the way her voice modulates, were absolutely spine chilling at times. And then, somehow, the movie is also truly funny in dark and unexpected ways. Can’t say enough good things about it. Definitely see this as being one of my favorites of the year, come year-end.
- filmaddict00724. maj 2026Obsession is the most effective horror film I’ve seen in quite some time. From its haunting atmosphere to its masterful cinematography, the film delivers a deeply unsettling experience that never loses its grip on the viewer. Every creative element works together flawlessly — the music, lighting, sound design, and performances all combine to create pure psychological terror. Inde Navarrette gives a jaw-dropping performance that deserves serious award recognition. Her portrayal is eerie, emotionally raw, and incredibly disturbing in the best possible way. She completely commands the screen whenever she appears, especially during the film’s more intense and terrifying moments. What makes the film stand out most is its writing and pacing. Every scene feels purposeful and engaging, constantly building tension while keeping you glued to the screen. The movie excels at creating moments that are not only frightening, but deeply uncomfortable and unnerving, capturing that cringeworthy sense of dread that great horror films strive for. The camerawork and lighting deserve special praise, particularly during the sequences involving Nikki. The visuals are stunning and horrifying at the same time, using shadows, framing, and movement in a way that amplifies the terror naturally rather than relying on cheap tricks. Another major highlight is the phenomenal sound design. The screams, distorted noises, and sudden bursts of sound are genuinely shocking and add an overwhelming sense of panic to many scenes. Combined with the ethereal yet increasingly sinister score, the film creates an atmosphere that feels almost hypnotic before descending into full nightmare territory. In my opinion, Obsession is the perfect horror movie — terrifying, beautifully crafted, emotionally unsettling, and unforgettable from beginning to end.
