So there I was, thinking Miley Cyrus is just a bit of a bimbo who makes forgettable pop and who’s only claims to fame are twerking and having a long tongue – and I was right about that as well. Okay, that’s a bit harsh. It’s tough to really dislike anyone who makes their character so decently ‘nice’ and wholesome, and she does sell that convincingly (not that she was given much to sell) - and she looks very cute, too. So Miley, who enjoys family bathtimes - is that normal or am I entirely missing a subplot here – loses the boy then gets him back again. (I suppose that's technically a spoiler, so for anyone who's never ever seen a teen romcom, I apologise.) Nothing ages faster than a teen-focused film and this one certainly makes the point; they even use mobiles phones with buttons on them! Actual, real buttons that you have to apply a pressure to. I guess they don’t make movies like this anymore, it’s like a Noughties film that arrived more than fashionable late for the party, but tries to get drunk and dance badly anyway. It literally has an entire decade of clichés to select from and it pigs out on just about all of them. And it’s totally woke-free, too. There's barely a single they/them, non-white, gay, disabled or trans character in sight, how offensive! They didn’t even mention about caring for the environment, I didn’t notice any recycling taking place and no one seemed to have any sort of mental health problem either. A few times it does exhibit that slightly surreal feeling that I really like in films, but then it dissipates and we’re back to a do-it-by-the-numbers White, middle-class, teen school romcom that’s as edgy as ping-pong ball. And I’m afraid during last ten minutes or so I started to taste some vomit in the back of my throat. Oh, and the band’s music is so averagely indie I literally forgot the tunes before they’d even finished playing them; thank goodness we don’t get to hear much of it; from the reaction of the crowd I can only assume that they must be starved of live music in Wrigley. Technically it’s fine, the plot is a cliché, the script’s mostly okay (and to be honest I did laugh out loud a few times), and the acting’s decent enough. But it is what it is and as a product of its time it hits most of its targets. I quite enjoyed it and mostly for the right reasons, too; (except the last few minutes - uurgh). No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
