- jackmeat14. december 2025My quick rating - 5.2/10. Well, this is a slow burner, taking us on a tense and introspective ride that is set in a war-torn Earth in the future. This thriller is directed by upcoming filmmaker Tanel Toom, who delves into the psychological effects of war on some soldiers who are placed at Sentinel, which is a far-off military base that is located in the middle of a massive body of water that forms a boundary between the two warring continents. It starts with four tired soldiers who, despite their tour of duty ending three months prior, are left stranded at Sentinel with no relief forces in sight. It is not until weeks turn into months that one can feel the presence of paranoia and isolation creeping into the base, putting their relationships with each other to the test. One of the major strengths of this movie is that it is able to generate a mood of tenseness throughout. This is made possible by the fact that it is a slow-moving film. This allows us to become completely involved in the psychological turmoil of the soldiers. The setting of the isolated military station helps to heighten the psychological turmoil of the characters. The acting in this movie is excellent, with Kate Bosworth standing out, with each of the actors putting forth excellent portrayals of men on the edge of losing their grip on sanity. Their portrayal of the turmoil of their characters' feelings, from resentment to debilitating fear, is excellent for this type of movie. Their dynamic with one another is excellent, too, as they work through their own group dynamic that is constantly shifting. It is excellent at psychological warfare, while possibly not being the best flick for people who enjoy lots of action or a plot that gets things moving. Some people might even have a little trouble with the pacing of this movie, since it often seems like not much is occurring with little plot development. Of course, I was sitting there hoping for something to occur since so little progress was often occurring, with too much pointless dialogue that seemed like it led to no end. It seemed like they were casting a shadow of judgment over some sort of doomsday device too often for one another's own good as well. Though for people who enjoy good storytelling that gets one thinking through the human condition, this is one movie that is positively eerie. It is just like it was chock-full of poor choices that seemed silly for the realism that had occurred for the rest of the movie. It is a movie that explores the fragility of the human mind through both its connections that unite, as well as its connections that divide. It takes its time with some introspection that is left to stay with the viewer. This flick won't be for everyone, but it is a movie that is captivating for people who enjoy good storytelling and have a bit of patience.
