This aint bad. It aint great either. You can feel its budget. And you can feel its not a seasoned director. He was a writer turned director for this one full movie. Regardless he does get pretty ambitious at times, with some bigger moments. And it does feel like its someone’s project bringing it all together, there is some good shots here and there and the story has it moments, and the music is full of character. But its also lacking in a lot of ways in almost every department. It feels like a bunch of amateurs doing almost professional work. Sorta felt it revealed its hand too early. The one professional review on plex mentions that the protagonist isn't empathetic at all. And i disagree. He shows restrained emotion. He has a dead wife apparently and continues to patronize his brother-in-laws place of business solely to help him out and visit it despite how annoying he is. He loves his brother-in-law. The very end proves it. All things i empathize with. But i do get it. He does go full coward when things go down in the final act. And plays no act in its resolution, just a hapless coward along for the ride. Big missed opportunity for some kind of arc there. I think peter gallagher is pretty good here for what hes given. Its subtle and he works for whats there. John lithgow with a hairpiece and using the F word every other sentence is kinda fun. Some characters are just shells and i dont get their inclusion. Other ones are set up and revealed and not really earned up in that reveal. And a lot are just there cause the plot needs to make the whatever happen. The more i think about it the less i like it, which sucks, because i was enjoying it marginally while watching. Oh well. 90’s charm at least right! I got through the whole review and never mentioned the title…. Oops.
