The sand pit, the underground tunnels, the emotionless “taken over” adults everything feels slightly off, like a nightmare you only half remember. Jimmy Hunt carries the story with genuine fear and confusion and the film’s practical effects and bold color palette give it a distinctive look that sets it apart from other 50s alien invasion movies. It’s the kind of movie you catch on TV and end up watching all the way through because the mood is so strange and hypnotic.
