I remember watching this from home and having the crap scared out of me during that *SPOILER* one scene with the mom floating on the ceiling. Not only does it excel in its scariness, but has excellent acting, writing, everything.

A large part of the movie feels painfully artificial, with characters repeatedly making questionable decisions and then being pushed into increasingly miserable situations simply so they can fall apart. There are intriguing ideas and some effective imagery, but the writing becomes increasingly contrived, culminating in an absolutely awful ending. After all the hype, I can't see how this qualifies as a horror masterpiece. And when the official trailer itself calls it “this generation’s The Exorcist, but heads will spin more savagely,” that comparison feels almost laughable in retrospect.

Given the brutality of these experiences and how they are captured, Ari Aster either turned his personal experience into a screen story, imagined such grievous trauma in his mind, or combined both truth and fiction. Hereditary is very often a hard watch, but it always feels honest.

- tellum18. august 2025I did not enjoy this as much as other horror fans, for me it was very plodding and the ending I didn’t care for. But there is some very disturbing imagery that is burned in my brain, and relatable realistic terror as well as supernatural terror. For bigger fans of the genre this is still a good movie.
- Evan May30. juli 2025Harrowing. The true terrors are in the first half. The second half tells a story to make sense of them. If only generational demons were so simple. The explanation is inexplicable. The result is multitonal, a partly comical fever dream dressed in visual discomfort. Yet the dread lingers past the runtime. Every scene holds attention. But the real artists were Steve Newburn and his team creating all those miniatures.
- daveayling77730. juli 2026WOW. Watched it 5 days ago and I'm still thinking about it and dissecting the themes in my head. Not for the faint hearted. Make sure you have someone to talk through about it after watching. The themes and meaning are deeper than they originally appear. Even if watching at face value. Incredible acting, unsettling and scary in all the right ways and very well thought out to the finest detail. Well done!
- 10. juni 2026I genuinely think this is one of the best horror movies this decade. The slowly unraveling mystery, the incredible acting and the gut wrenching twists have stayed with me since seeing it in theaters. Not too thrilled to hear about the prequel, but here’s hoping it’s just as good as this modern masterpiece.
