Umiddelbart efter færdiggørelsen af sin egen storfilm The Alamo (1960) drønede John Wayne til Afrika for at medvirke i sin ven Howard Hawks Afrika-eventyrfilm Hatari. Davy Crockett blev til Sean Mercer, en skrap jæger, som i filmen lever af at indfange vilde dyr og sælge dem til zoologiske haver. En film uden nogen egentlig handling, men med flot fotografering og søde elefanter, som helt stjæler showet – godt hjulpet af Henry Mancinis "Baby Elephant Walk".
