Beacon Academy is a year between 8th and 9th grade for motivated inner-city students to receive the instruction, encouragement, and guidance they need to be able to apply to some of New England's top independent boarding high schools. As students begin to realize their potential, they gain perspective on the public schools from which they've come, realizing inadequacies, and they begin to wonder if they'll fit into the world they're preparing to join -- that of the privileged, mostly-white prep-school. Classroom discussion of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye is meant to make the audience think -- what is the effect of telling a child to desire a world so different from her own? Is it that she'll spend her life wishing for blue eyes? Three students guide us through their experience of this year, as they set their sites on dream schools the year culminates in an emotional notification day.
