Neo-Tokyo har nu rejst sig af asken – en mørk og farlig megalopol, befængt med bander og terrorister. Regeringen er korrupt og har kun svag kontrol med det magtfulde militær, der beskytter byen mod totalt kaos, og som med magt tilbageholder fortidens hemmeligheder. Barndomsvennerne Tetsuo og Kaneda befinder sig pludselig midt i en af disse hemmeligheder, da deres motorcykelbande tilfældigt havner i en militæraktion. Tetsuo tages til fange og udsættes for en række eksperimenter, der giver ham overnaturlige psykologiske evner. Desværre løber Tetsuos evner løbsk, og han langer ud efter den verden, der igennem hele hans liv har undertrykt ham. Intet kan stoppe Tetsuos destruktive kraft – undtagen måske den dreng, der sidst lagde Tokyo i ruiner – Akira!

That said, this American for one, would argue that it would be much improved by trimming about 30 minutes from the theatrical cut. Heck, were it possible, put together a 3.5 hour version for manga/anime completists; the current cut suffers pacing-wise from half-movie and half manga series.

Call this watch “homework” for new anime fans

The art style and atmosphere pull you into its chaotic world, and it's easy to see how it influenced a lot of what came after. That said, I had a hard time following the story. Some parts felt rushed or unclear, and I found myself confused more than once. I know it’s a classic and was ahead of its time, but as a first-time viewer, I left feeling a bit lost even though I appreciated the film’s ambition and style.
