As a person from Newfoundland, I can say they did a very good job portraying the province. The actors also did a very good job with the accents. The show itself was enjoyable. Great soundtrack also!

I've been hyped for this one for months, so I'm a little disappointed with how it turned out. The Newfoundland setting is fantastic, the small-town atmosphere really works, and the mystery surrounding the creature had me hooked early on. Josh Hartnett is great, and I liked how the story mixes the monster horror with the town's struggles and the family's complicated relationships. There's a lot of potential here, and the first half had me expecting something pretty special. Unfortunately, the second half loses quite a bit of steam. The story gets increasingly messy, some of the side plots feel like distractions, and the environmental themes become more interesting than the actual creature horror. The finale also feels pretty underwhelming after all that buildup. Still, the setting, Hartnett's performance and the genuinely intriguing premise make it worth watching. Just a shame it never quite delivers on what had me so excited in the first place.

Netflix’s Below starts with a fun creepy premise: a remote Newfoundland fishing village, a giant squid terrorizing the locals, and a mystery box full of supernatural possibilities. Unfortunately, around episode four, the series begins to lose the plot, and not even a giant sea monster can save it from itself. Thankfully, the performances are solid. Josh Hartnett brings weary intensity to Calvin Penney, Mackenzie Davis adds intelligence and credibility as marine researcher Fonda Howander, and Charlie Heaton delivers an unsettling performance as Calvin’s troubled son, Wade. The cast does its best to keep things grounded while the story starts swimming in circles. Initially, Below builds an intriguing mystery, dangling clues that suggest something genuinely supernatural is lurking beneath the waves. But halfway through, the giant squid takes a backseat to corruption, land grabs, and corporate greed. Suddenly, we’re watching a small town political drama that occasionally remembers it has a monster in it. Then there’s Calvin’s connection to his original homeland and his other son Jay being chased by mobsters over his debts. Because apparently, a murderous sea creature wasn’t enough trouble for one fishing village. By the midpoint, the show feels like three different writers’ rooms crammed their scripts together and hoped nobody would notice. The ecological message is interesting, particularly as the series suggests the squid might be misunderstood and humans are the real villains. But there’s one inconvenient detail: the creature has BRUTALLY murdered several townspeople and the ice it brought with it poisoned the rest. Asking us to sympathize with the oversized aquatic menace while glossing over its body count makes for some questionable moral gymnastics. And the ending? A cliffhanger that seems designed to set up another season rather than deliver a satisfying conclusion. Instead of leaving me desperate for answers, it left me wondering whether I cared enough to come back. This show reminded me a lot of a movie from the late 90s that also featured a big sea monster and ultimately disappointed viewers, Godzilla (1998). Everything from the giant monster killing people to trying to hatch its offspring to trying to make you feel sorry for the monster at the end. Bottom line, if anything makes you think of or remind you of that horrible movie it’s bound to absolutely SUCK!

Good plane binge. A little silly but still entertaining.

An excellent premise and first episode, but plots start to fall short near the end - it screams of budget changes and rewrites. Feels like it was written to be 10 episodes, not 6. A fun watch, but nothing to write home about. Good to put on in the background while doing other things.
  • Kept expecting someone to steal Josh Hartnett's lucky charms.

a working class, antiexploitation, cli-fi, retelling of free willy but with icebergs and cephalopods instead of whales was not what i thought i was getting into when i started this, in the best possible way.

Mixed feelings about this but overall we enjoyed it. Seemed about the right length at six eps, started to drag a bit near the end. Cast and sets were pretty amazing. Always love seeing Mackenzie get a solid role. She's always been good. Felt like "they needed a bigger boat" thru a lot of it but they did a good job keeping the mystery going about what was happening to the town.

A thoroughly watchable six-part creature thriller set in a struggling Newfoundland fishing town. Josh Hartnett plays a widowed fisherman confronting an ancient, intelligent cephalopod while trying to keep his family and community together. The sea-monster mystery, coastal atmosphere and brisk pacing are the main attractions. The corporate resettlement scheme and the rather bizarre Old Hag subplot make things more complicated than necessary, but the story brings its emotional themes together nicely in the finale. Not especially tidy, but entertaining throughout. I appreciated the ending's suggestion that the creature was never quite the villain everyone assumed.
